Looking to see if towing a donut (or two) with teenaged kids on a tender (air deck or similar) and a 9.9hp 2 stroke (or similar) is viable? If not what combination would work, but still have the portability/stowability of the above.

Unlikey I would have thought - I've got a 2.7m tender with a (very light) 9.8hp two-stroke, and although it will eventually plane with two on board, I don't think it would have the welly to tow anything at planing speeds.

I have an Avon 280 with a fiberglass hull and 9.9hp on the back. That will reasonably easily pull a ringo with a 16 year old and plane.'s ok. I think with an air deck type tender you will struggle to keep it steering straight ahead but it'll be fun trying.

I must be doing it wrong! :D:D

The outboard, a Yamaha 9.9hp two stroke might, just might have been uprated by a previous owner which on these is fairly easy so I've been told.
So Jimmy, you might just have been doing it right, I've just been cheating

Sounds good, I believe those more able than me can convert to effectively a 15hp... need to work that one out later. I suspect an aluminium or fibreglass bottom may be the way.

If you think an Avon 280 with a 9.9hp Yam 2 stroke on a road trailer might be the way forward then pm me, I might know of one available.

What crazy said in his/her first post, regarding air deck and keeping in straight line.
I had a 3m valiant rib with 10hp 2stroke and steering and remotes.
It would pull a 12 stone adult on a ringo at probably just under 20mph. Even had room to back off the throttle.
I'd say you would defo need a 2 stroke though, if you thinking about this kind of size and hp. Doubt a 4 stroke would have the guts to get the ringo and boat planing.

We used to have a Valiant circa 3m with solid hull and a 10hp 2-stroke Mercury outboard. When the kids were younger the three of us used to go out with a knee board or a ringo and it did fine. As they got older and bigger it started to struggle and definitely wouldn't pull my lad if there were two adults in the RIB.

I went on a summer cruise with a fellow that had a 2.80 grp hull and 15hp combo. A fantastic little tender but I found it was marginal for most water toys as it would struggle to get on the plane while towing. It could just about get a kneeboarder up. He has a 20hp for it that he says is better for toys. The downside to such a tender is the weight. He was in a V40 Princess and he really struggled to get it on the swim platform hurley davits

We have a F-Rib 360 with a 20hp Suzuki (4 stroke). Whilst great as a tender, fast, lots of room, easy to rig etc, it doesnt pull toys very well and thats with young kids (10yo).
