I want to tow a boat from UK to Ancona in Italy to catch ferry to Greece. The regulations are hard to understand with lots of conflicting information.

The trailer Plus boat is 8.15m Long from tow ball to propellor. Total rig length with car is circa 13m

width should be ok at 2.3m But I intend to fit wide view mirrors.

Height is under 3m

weight of the trailer plus boat is circa 2200kg which is well within tow capacity of my VW Touareg of 3500kg

Questions that I am struggling to get clarity on include:

- is there any overall length restriction ?

- do i need any special insurance certification, including separate certificate for the trailer?

- Can I pass multiple borders with Covid 19 restrictions ?

- do I need special long vehicle signs on the rear?

in the UK it would be legal, but I am worried about pedantic Italian Officialdom.

Any help gratefully received.

It is quite a few years ago now, but we towed a similar length trailer plus boat, using an old Defender, ferry from Ancona to Patras, then ferry from Patras to Kefalonia, we had no problems at all, no one cared, no one looked or checked.

Having lived in Sicily and driven from Poland to Italy several times and Sicily/UK numerous times I can confirm that the only problems we had were at the (supposedly Schengen) Austrian/Italian border. The Austrian border police are voracious in their attempts to extract wonga.
