Towergate have asked for a survey

Many insurance companies will expect you to have a survey that is less than 5 years old, if your boat is over 20 years old. Not all insurance companies will actually bring this to your attention, but it may well be there in the small print. You may only find out about it when you try to make a claim for your 21 year old boat and the first thing they ask for is the survey. I can't remember who I was insured with on my last boat, but that is exactly the situation I was in. I had cover, they didn't ask me for a survey during the process of putting me on cover, when I read the small print after cover commenced the clause was there in black and white. My boat was 25 years old. Always read the small print.

My boat is 42 years old and part of the insurance deal is it must be surveyed every five years over twenty years old.it's not just the condition of the boat itself, fire protection equipment, safety equipment etc. etc. survey cost for me this year 400 odd squid.

GJW actually wrote to me just after my previous boats 19th birthday to advise a survey would be required to ensure continuation of cover sometime in the next 12 months. I was quite impressed.

... is this normal
Depends on age etc
Towergate were the lot who refused to pay out on large losses suffered by two posters on here. We made them pay in the end, but it was vvv difficult. If you choose them as your insurance provider, I wish you well

Same here but GJW give me several years notice.

If my surveyor knows his stuff, I don't mind paying for one every 5 years. Whilst the survey may not reveal anything that I didn't know about (sometimes it has) it focuses my mind on jobs that I really ought to do. One recommendation my surveyor made regarding reinforcing the mooring cleats probably saved my boat.
