Planning a first trip to the Balearic's mid June this year and interested in suggestions for a cruising route over say 2 weeks (flexible) with 1 or 2 nights in each marina (never been completely at ease at anchor and do like restaurant eating out in the evening!). Maybe an hours motoring per day ie 25 miles (flexible again)

Our start point would be Ciudadella in Menorca since we will be leaving the mainland from north Spain (probably Empuriabrava to Palamos then across)

Nearer the time we will be asking for "buddies" if anyone is interested/available in doing a similar route.

All suggestions welcome
Cheers
David

Hi

We are based there and it is lovely.

If you have 2 weeks I would suggest a leisurely lap of the island with a trip to Cabrera as you go past - max 2 nights in season on a bouy in a very sheltered natural harbour.

If you are less than 15m then the state marinas are good, and can be booked on line which is simple and cheap.

There are bouys run by the Poseidon Project ( protecting sea grass) http://www.balearslifeposidonia.eu/index.php?register_vars[lang]=en again bookable and cheap.

There are also some bouys around the island you can pick up and pay for.

As to where to go, from Menorca an itinerary could be

- Pollenca

Bit bucket and spade, but lovely huge bay, anchorages to the North ( mostly) as long as you avoid the military areas

- Round to Soller

This would be your longest single stretch. Say 2-3 hours

The Coast is pretty barren , but to the North and South of Soller are some lovely calas.

- Round to Andrax - either than main Port, bouys, or the Govt Port. Govt Port is basic but closer to the restaurants.

- Round to Santa Ponza

Nice marine , quiet, with lovely big bay on your door step.

- Round to Portals Vells -

Very Popular and very large Cala pretty safe for an over night anchor. Has several beaches, one nudist!

- Portals is good, but check if they are in season or not. If they are it is very expensive.

-Palma has the cheapest fuel on the Island . You can stop or head past.

- Cabreara Island

- Cala Dor

- stop on route somewhere you fancy

- Alcudia

We were based in Majorca for 5 seasons and the places I would recommend to visit are as follows in a clockwise direction

Alcudia - eat at Mecon Dulcinea for superb steaks
Cala d'Or - plenty of shoreside restaurants or eat at Yacht Club (nice)
Club de Mar (Palma) - take taxi into Palma Old Town (cocktails Abaco then any restaurant in old town area)
Santa Ponsa - marina restaurant is good
Andratx - any shoreside restaurant
Soller - take old tram ride upto Soller town and pick any restaurant

Generally, Tripadvisor is your friend for picking restaurants

Jrudge has most covered, Cabrera is not to be missed, I really like Soller (it has a different feel to the rest of Mallorca), Santa Ponca marina not so keen but good anchorage. Personally I like Sa Rapita marina although not everyone does, the beach there is not to be missed. Cala Dor is very worth a visit. Mahon in Minorca hasn't been mentioned, it's a fantastic natural harbour, definitely worth a stop over and there are some excellent anchorages nearby.
Forget Can Pastilla & Arenal, imho, Palma is much better and other than Puerto Portals, the place to stop over in the bay of Palma.

Thanks jrudge, Deleted User and pan
I've just drawn the routes out on a chart and it looks like I have a plan. I'm pleased that there is a high level of agreement of the places to go.
Thanks jrudge for the links. I'm 11 meters so fit the portsib criteria.
I don't particularly want to book ahead, what's your experience of mid June availability? Say arriving after lunch at marinas.
Cheers

use the port IB's places like pollenca and cala rajada, porta crista, port colom for a bit of chilling time to see the true Mallorca go to colonia sant pere. lovely town / village and yacht club.

To book online you need to register ( marinas and buoys) on line first and they will want scans of boat reg etc.

Availability will probably be fine outside of July and August ... but you never know! The challenge is you often can't phone the state marinas as they close up until about 6 when everyone arrives. So it is a bit pot luck. I don't think you can book online same day - not sure on that but don't think you can.

For a 11m boat each night is probably sub E50, so if you don't turn up it is not a disaster.

Also re arriving after lunch, if you have reserved on line there are usually ( but not always) signs saying "for reserved on line" or similar. and you take a berth. If you turn up earlier than 6 ( everyone arrives at 6 which is the deadline ) you may find that there is no one there!

Calla Figuera ( govt marina) is also nice - it only has 5 berths! Just south of Cala Dor

Thanks AIDY and jrudge
I've just registered with the BalearsLifePosidonia for bouys in the NW but can't find a way of registering with portsib.

Anyway I've printed off the portsib pics and ticked your recommendations which will be of great help....thanks!

i would not be too bothered abut booking in to any of the port IB's turn up just after lunch and you should find a space. never had any problems with both our boats 40 and 50 foot..... port ib's only permit a couple of nights in high season.

We had a really good trip in June - two F43's in company, see #24 of the following thread:

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthrea...s-to-ibiza-cabrera-andratx-in-june&highlight=

Club de Vela in Andraitx: great, we stayed there 5 nights. Little expensive but some nice local restaurants in easy walking distance and the bus into Palma first stop is outside the marina gate! Nice marina restaurant and pool there too.

Portals Vells: good, but gets very busy, keep your eye on day-boaters trying to drop their chain over yours and keep the ladies away from the binoculars!

Es Trenc: excellent, love it, beach bars and all, really enjoyed staying on the hook there over night there.

Cabrera: great, tranquil and relaxing, take a look at the blue cave just outside.

Soller: very nice but gets busy with tourists, orange train to Palma, great fun.

Pollenca: liked it there may pop in again this year...

We're planning to go North Mallorca / Menorca this year....!

Hi John,
Thank you for that. We are coming to Sant Carles the end of May with a view to setting off for the Balaerics beginning of June!

Hi John,

Apologies to OP in advance for thread drift..... SCM is a great base and provides excellent facilities/value. Not the same hustle bustle of marina's further north/south, an eclectic mix of boaters with a strong British contingent all willing to assist each other with help and advice. We arrived in September 2008 and have been there ever since. I am struggling to get out there at the moment due to heavy work commitments but will be going out soon and will be there late May, for our trip in June - call around anytime, my F43 is on L pontoon!

There is one great place where the gin and tonics are memorable, but I will have to get back when i can remember the great place, Tony was the bar man, Cala D'Or the place.......

all g and t in mallorca are memorable.

Huge bowl like glass. Heaps of ice. Heaps of gin. A splash of tonic. Peeled lemon rind and I think juniper "seeds" (not sure they make any difference)!

all g and t in mallorca are memorable.
Yes they are and we found that the most gargantuan g & t's are served in Andraitx. I think the Germans like their g & t's served by the same volume as their beer!
