Tour de France à la voile (New boat for...)
Each year this race takes place in one-design boats (currently Farr 30's - ex-Mumm 30's) starting in the Channel and finishing in the Med.
They have just announced a new boat for 2011, the M34 designed by Joubert Nivelt. I think it's a very interesting concept :
34 foot boat with a beam less than 3 metres allowing its transport by road trailor.
Draft can be reduced from 8' to 5' to facilitate trailoring and entry into ports.
Mast is in sections again to facilitate trailoring.
Limited number of sails allowed.
Engine 18/20 hp.
Crew weight limited to 470 kg. You can have as many as you like within this limit.
Total cost without sails and electronics but including the trailor to be limited to 120000 euros ex VAT.
They have announced a Trans Atlantic Race for 2011/2012 using these boats.
To me this represents real sport rather than the spectacle of the America's Cup and the indecent sums of money concerned.
