HI there,

I am looking for a supplier of toughened glass that can shape oval port glass for a classic yacht. Prefer glass but will go for polycarb as that could be lasercut using existing as template. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Almost any glass supplier can provide toughened glass. It's a heat process which is applied to the glass after it's been cut to size.

Toughened glass is not really suitable, as it will shatter after impact - it is designed to do that. More suitable would be laminated glass which will crack, but not totally fail immediately.

You can use glass suitable for patio doors, which is a minimum of 6mm, but 8mm is available, which is laminated and you can get any local glass merchant to cut it to the shape you require.

I have dealt with Pilkington for automotive applications, and recommend their products, see below.

I had 6 toughened glass windows made up for Sniper 8 years ago by either Needham Market glass or SP glass, also in Needham. Sorry, I can't remember which, but the cost at the time was £70 plus vat, which seemed very competitive.

Toughened glass is also several times stronger than ordinary glass. As this is needed for the porthole on a classic yacht it will probably be quite small so toughened glass may well be perfectly suitable for this particular application.

I recently replaced the instrument cover on my boat using 6mm acylic from Ipswich Plastics. It was easy to cut using a hacksaw with a metal cutting blade. The smallest piece you can buy from I.P.was about £17.

You could speak to Houdini see http://www.houdini-marine.co.uk/ who are in Southminster, South Essex, they have their own small factory for making hatches, doors, windows etc. Houdini made 2 custom opening wheelhouse windows for us and we are very pleased

There is also a company in the industrial estate on the way into Burnham on Crouch who make hatches and windows who may be able to help

If this is a concern you can have Toughened glass laminated as I have in my wheel house windows.
