Yes there was. I have walked between the two islands over the shallow bits and vehicles forded the gap at low water. There was always a good chunk of seabed exposed at low water at the track ends, to some extent.
sorry, that is not how i recall it. yes to the tracks on the shore sides. no to the hardcore/stones that are there now. what was the ford is now about 18-24" above the original seabed, as a road of (new 3 years ago) stones.

Edit - as per pic in post 111

The hardcore stones will be new, and the seabed may have been left raised after the blockage removal works, but the seabed allowed fording at low water, been visiting this place since early 80’s.

indeed, the stones and causeway, basically, are new. the seabed either side, and the length/depth/seabed of the channel are as before. we also have been visiting since 1980. it is quite different, and causes flow to cease at LW, which is also new. (newish!)

there has been a ford there for who knows how long. but the causeway is new.
