Is a fresh water wash after every use required in the instructions? If so it sugests that the manufacturer/suppliers know that the materials are not fit for use in the marine environment. I have used petrol outboards of various sizes in sea water over the years and they might have got a fresh water hose wash at the end of the season when flushing through, or in one case (not my engine) when the boat and engine was swamped and sunk. It ran just as well for the rest of the contract after the engineer cleaned it.

My 1103 looked a bit like that after 4 years and very little washing down (long-term cruising). No biggie - I just sanded the offending areas down to bare metal & sprayed them with outboard primer and some Honda silver. It's not as beautiful as the un-mucked-about with version, but hey, life's too short.

The tilting mechanism is s**t though - the original welds broke on the little horizontal bar, which miraculously ended up in the bottom of the dinghy. A passing welder re-did it, stronger, but it broke off again after literally weeks and this time went to Davy Jones' locker. Good riddance. A loose bit of wood now does a much better job (eyeroll)
