Re: Lubricated threads

Exactly what I said Mick, they must be dry, I have never seen in a long career, a manufacturer stipulating threads oiled for torqueing up, not even rolls royce, which oil??? etc. But of course I'm sure somebody will prove me wrong!!

Re: Lubricated threads

Sorry, beg to differ. The correspondent who said refer to manufacturer's instructions is the most accurate, but I know very few who call for dry. Dresser-Rand and General Electric certainly specify a thread lubricant. At one time Thomassen used to call for dry threads but this has now been changed. I have conducted a number of studies into my company's practice around the world, in refineries, offshore platforms and LNG. In addition to the larger equipment referred to above this includes diesel engines, pumps and pipework. Copperslip was widely used, i.e. virtually everywhere, but we then found a possibility that intergranular problems are associated with this product in high temperature service. We now recommend nickel based thread lubricants for general use.

For less specialised duties, look at http://www.europeansealing.com/publications/guidelines.htm for the European Sealing Association' advice. They also recommend that threads be lubricated.

Mick, I was not suggesting that the oil can be emptied down a threaded hole! (although it might be better for our profits). Light oiling is sufficient. :~)

Re: Lubricated threads

Well, I said I was sure somebody would correct me, but for engines, you will find that all of the engines I have worked on from rolls royce 6-V12 to tanks to minis and motor bikes, the threads are stipulated dry. Older engines admitted. I must admit to putting copper or nickel/zinc based lubricant on damn near everything I bolt together, apart from mains, big ends, heads etc. Lanolin on bottle screws shackles.
