Torpmarsts

I guess that Dan has much more knowledge of telegraph posts than this agricultural person - who usually chops them up (down?) for gate posts.

[/sigh] (sound idea :) )

I do however still have the isue of taking down the old one

Is there anywhere you can sail Olive to, with a bridge or old crane overhead, and attach a good industrial strop plus winch. Or contact your local Sea Cadets / RNR to see if they would like to run a topmast extraction project ?

Sir, have I inadvertently angered you? :D

Of course, I'd gladly assist Beadle as a 'sparring' partner... ...but I don't seriously claim a grain of knowledge...:o...signed, Old Crane

that was very thoughtless of me. I apologise. :o

A sudden thought:

Snow Leopard, and some others, know their way round square riggers and ST ships. Unrigging a topmast should be something they do before breakfast....

I'll happily provide the breakfast.

Actually the topmast is rigged with a rope round a pulley wheel at the foot of the topmast and runs through a metal ring so it should lower down nice and gently.

I have electric winches for raising the gaff and I can rig one of those to lower it under complete control (and there's famous last words).

I'm quite looking forward to doing it now.

you should get it filmed so we can all see the process and join in the applause at the end !

My grandmother's name was Olive. Born in 1894. Didn't die till 1995. Now she was an old Crane...

Thats a pretty good innings for anyones granny - well done Olive.

I have tried to find out who the original Olive Page is or was - with no success

Perhaps I could adopt your late granny and hope my Olive has such a long life.

As for the topmast if dropping - err I mean lowering it looks iffy I'll get the boatyard to crane it down.

If you are referring to whom the Olive Page boat was named after, I might be able to help you. Looking at the pictures, I believe this was my dads boat. It was originally named after his mum, my nan. I just happened to be looking for pictures of it to show a friend, and came across this post. If this is not what you are referring to, then I look a little silly right now and I take back my post :)
