On my last flight to the US I noticed the emergency torches on the plane next to the cabin crew's seat. It was a solid looking jobbie held in a nice sturdy holder. Does anyone have any idea where one might buy these, or anything like it. Prefereably not at the cost I imagine Boeing has to pay for them:o

This looks interesting. A docking station torch and some LED engine room lights. ( oops missed the link and now i cant find it : ) )

There does seem to be a dearth of torches with matching brackets. Googling 'maglite bracket' does come up with a few results ( made by maglite ) but they are just clips.

on this page there is a rechargeable version http://www.edenwebshops.co.uk/en/ct/maglite.htm but it does come with a Boeing / Airbus price tag of £109

Furneaux Riddall do a Pro range of White Knight torches but I've just noticed their website is being redesigned at present and the range is not online but if you have a catalogue it is in there.

Their torches are used by police/ambulance etc. and have docking stations. Would be worthwhile giving them a ring or have a look for White Knight on google to see these torches.

This one looks OK.

All the solutions proposed are fine for the high budget types.

My solution for the Snapdragon end of the market is an Aldi version of the 3 D-cell Maglight and a couple of plastic tool clips. Torch £3 (think - I've had them for 5+ years), clips £1, new D cells once a season, maybe £5 for both torches - the other one lives in the glovebox of the car.

nah, none of these are really what I am looking for.
1) I want them not rechargeable
2) the holder MUST be sturdy and hold the torch well in case of "air turbulence"
Keep looking

You are a hard man to please :)

The Tk35 does take both rechargeable and non rechargeable batteries (and they wont leak). The holder is soft, but I would guarantee that the torch in this holder would survive anything that a human could.

Given that you didn’t like that one what about this

And this

(or something similar from the hardware store)

To give you an idea how tough these torches are have a look at

The torch featured the Trunite V2 is very tough. There is no commercial holder for it but some PVC pipe or canvas bag would work well.
It will take rechargeable and non rechargeable batteries.

Do I need to keep looking :(

nonono...
the torches are fine. I can find plenty of those. It is the holder that is the problem. Those clips don't really cut the mustard

Mounting a torch in an aircarft

You must have been impressed by the design of the torch holder in the aircraft. Aircraft design standards require that equipment be mounted to withstand huge G forces in various directions. I think something like 24G in forward direction and several G up down sideways and backwards. This to avoid the equipment in this case the torch become a dangerous flying missile in a crash or severe turbulence. So while you like the look of it, it would be absurd to demand the same rugged mounting in your boat as in an aircraft.
Velcro (hook and pile can work really well) good luck olewill
