Hoping to be out in Torbay tomorrow to watch the Torquay stage of the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes powerboat racing. Is anyone else around? We'll probably aim to be loitering somewhere around Meadfoot so as not to get too close (not enough freeboard for large wakes!) Taking the camera too so if you want pictures of your boat underway, come and say Hi  (Working late tonight, so hoot if I don't see you - I might not be as alert as usual...)

Details of muster points etc here: http://www.tor-bay-harbour.co.uk/hmn2813.pdf (Just so you know where to not to be!)

Will post some pictures late Sunday/Monday if all goes to plan!

There is a chance we will be out but are a bit short handed as middle son went home early. If there is minimal wind though we may pop out as Meadfoot is just around the corner and we won't get spray over our freshly jet washed decks. We'll keep an eye out for you .... Hopefully in the sun.

I am planning to be out tomorrow, but probably south of Berry Head but may get a look at them rounding the mark nearby. Small tides over the weekend so got to find somewhere for a spot of fishing where the tide is not too slack.

Update as promised...

Ok, early(ish) start and on the water before 8:30 having got back from gig at 2:30am and unloaded PA etc early this morning...

Quick blast across a millpond that was Torbay and then followed the contour of the shoreline from the headland back to a suitable vantage point by the Imperial Hotel. A few up close nature shots accompanied breakfast at anchor.

This fella's clearly lacking a few hp to have come from Cowes.

Bizarre course this - just need to sink this putt for hole number 5...

A-ha! First arrivals - some going as time only 9:58am!

Unfortunately the x2 teleconverter for new camera didn't arrive in time so even at 200mm, I've had to crop most of the following. Thankfully at 24mp, there's enough definition to play with!

This fella seemed to have missed the start and is heading the other way... ;-) Actually it was astonishing how many folk don't listen to VHF or apparantly read HM notices as policing the route/gate seems to have been a headache.

Having waited around for around an hour for stragglers, we decided to head off around the Bay for some R&R and then off around Berry Head down to Dartmouth. We only ventured to just short of Dartmouth, and having watched an onshore casualty recovered from the beach at t Mary's Bay to inshore LB and then transfer to the ALB, we headed back to Brixham.

Journey's end - until next weekend.

And all before lunchtime - boat home, cleaned and drying in the Sun by 2pm :D

Ah yes - just realised it was your diesel speedboat thread... I was slow putting the two together there! :)

Personally, I wouldn't go the diesel route unless you own a chippy and looking to use up the old oil! You pay a premium for the motor, often expensive parts as unlike the bigger diesels there are less common and finally I think you'll discover that fuel is a small part of your costs. As an example, yesterday I did about 18 miles and used approx 12-13L fuel - approx £1.35 * 13 - £17.55 (plus a bit of 2-stroke oil - £1.50?) - ok for a 50hp 2 stroke. We did a mix of trolling along at tick-over, cruising at 17-20kts and a few flat-out blasts at 30kts! Cost exceeded by slipway & trailer parking £14.50 and car parking £9 - yes really £9!!!!!! Then there's all the routine costs like repairs, insurance, trailer maintenance, fuel to get to slipway etc. IMHO, unless you are going to do a couple of hundred hours a year then diesel isn't worth the premium.

any idea what a 3lt petrol would use in fuel? I had a 60hp yam 2 stroke about 1990 on my last boat and it used shed loads of fuel, cost us around £30-40 to go to Dartmouth and back and maybe long way round the bay back to torquay harbour your 2 stroke sounds really good on fuel

Not sure on the 3ltr petrol, but a friend has a 4.3 on a Maxum 1800 bowrider - I'll ask what he gets. He has said that it's surprisingly frugal it not at WOT, but it is a later MPI engine so less thirsty. I can use much more fuel if I stay at WOT, but find that dropping back into 17-20kt zone halves the fuel burn. On the previous 30hp we would get 1.1ltr/mile at WOT (20kts), 0.9ltr/mile on the river (5kts) or 0.7ltr/mile at around 15kts - thus the mid-range is key to cost! I've just invested in some smart tabs to fit before a mini meet-up with friends this weekend - they claim a 10% fuel economy so we'll see what happens! The plan is a run around to Salcombe, so fingers crossed for calm water Sunday...

Did any one get a picture of the little sticky that sailed across the start line 3 minutes before the restart?

Absolutely fabulous seamanship, clearly wearing blinkers as well!

Hi Paul, I missed that as we headed down the coast towards Dartmouth before the restart, but there was quite a bit of radio traffic warning various vessels that they were crossing or about to cross the racing line. There were even a few vessels that left Torquay harbour and appeared to head straight into the course - RYA and harbour boats had a few interventions. Makes you wonder if anyone reads the harbour notices doesn't it? I guess next weekend will be similar as there's Zap Cat and powerboat racing...

Bit late now but i was there too... Pretty sure i remember seing your boat, There was 2 of us in my old white and red fletcher arrowstreak.... :)

I think I saw you guys too, but unfortunately didn't take many pictures whilst underway. Whilst the boat is quite dry most of the time, the odd wake etc chucks quite a bit of spray over us and I didn't want to wreck the camera! That and taking pictures with a telephoto lens at 20kts whilst keeping a lookout for pots etc isn't an art I've quite mastered yet... :D

On the subject of pots, we spotted a few gems - this was one of the better/more visible improvisations:

Sadly there were a number of small 'coke bottle' type too.
