\'TOP TIPS\' Thread

How about starting a 'Top Tips' Thread where contributors can add their most useful tips. It could be an on going thread which should prove interesting reading which we can all learn from. It might unearth some useful bits of knowledge, which might never have come to light without ploughing through all the past postings.

To start it off, here's a few of mine, but would love to hear of other tried and tested tips :

1. Water from your dehumidifer, can be put to use for topping up your fresh water cooling system in your boat engine and the radiator of your car, eliminating the lime scale build up you get from tap water. Far better than devising ways of getting your dehumidifer to drain down the galley sink or via bilges.

2. A cheaper way of cleaning teak decks, is to use Dishwasher Solution, diluted with water 50/50.

Scrub with the diluted solution, rinse and scrub again with clean water to get the solution out, then rinse again. It really brings them up clean at a fraction of the cost of those proprietory brand Teak Cleaners.

3. Make your own life line cushions. Ask your local sailmaker if has got any offcuts of sailcloth/canvas to match your sprayhood. Sew into a tube shape and insert a length of plumbers pipe lagging - thread onto your cockpit lifelines and bingo - a back rest at less than half the price than the ones advertised in the catalogues. (I also had enough bits left over to make matching winch covers, but they take a bit more effort).
