Don't forget that it is that time of year to drop one or two disposable nappies into the bilges to soak up that annoying bit of oil and water that the pump just cannot get at. Leave for a day or two before hooking out with the boat hook. Enjoy.

Not if you get more than a cupful of water in the bilges it isn't. The water absorbing gel in them swells up and bursts the nappy, meaning you have to bail out semi-solids instead of oil and rainwater. Better to hook them out after an hour or two and repeat the process later in the winter if necessary.

Re: Top tip.- improved

You will still get more water from condensation and the nappy will disintigrate. My top tip is to fit a microbore copper pipe (8 or 10mm) into the very bottom of the bilge and use this to get out the last of the bilge water every time you leave her. For a pump I use an old plastimo hand- held bilge pump modified to work like a giant syringe and connected to the copper pipe by a short length of rubber hose. The pipe runs up the bilge and is accessible close to the engine flywheel. This has worked well for years
