Re: whether BBC makes loot?

I agree, I also find the new edition of Top Gear far more entertaining than the previous show had become. I admit it may not be so technically minded but I like the new mixture, even though J.C. is too full of his own importance and is bound to become tiresome after a while. I wish there was a similar series on boating on TV. Wonder who the presenters would be. Any suggestions? Byron, tcm ??

Re: whether BBC makes loot?

No , I wouldn't have those two !!!

Haydn and Harry with Jimmie for the glamour input !

Re: Eeeek!

God's teeth!!! Byron and TCM presenting on telly? It would be completely incomprehensible, but probably quite entertaining. Could have PaulineB as a Vicky Henderson-Hyphen-Butler token-totty character, JFM as The Stig, and there is no shortage of contenders from the upper Thames for "Old Goat in a Reasonably Priced Boat".

Bloke TV for Boats

Top Gear tried a boaty version a few years ago which was OK-ish (Clarkson pining after a Sunseeker and Tiff reminiscing about how his dad was an early leading light of offshore powerboat racing in the UK) but it was really just TG with water.

Various other people have tried over the years. When I was very young, in the '60's, Southern TV (RIP) did a fair amount of sea-based programming, including bombing around the Solent in a gas turbine powered ex-MTB, doing coverage of Cowes Week and the Cowes-Torquay race. They also produced an excellent boating magazine programme called "Afloat"; probably the only one of its kind in the UK.

It's a difficult subject to convey to people via TV imho, because you can't really get across the excitement of being on the water. The documentary about Ellen McArthur last year got it right (well, I think it did, anyway). On the other hand, I don't think the recent Louis Vuitton coverage on Beeb & satellite did, tho' Peter Snow gave it his best shot and is, at least, a bona fide yottie.

Oh dear.

What have I started.

I just wanted to know whether there is a stinkie version of a souped up SEAT ibiza. Spoilers, headlights, exhausts....
But it ended in a discussion about the use of public broadcasting (compared to our gov't tv, the beeb is world class. ours makes USSR-TV look absolutely glamorous); a personal attack on Clarkson (OK, I could use him on a windless day, as he's full of it) and the byegone era of an empire.
You lot are absolutely daft.
Well, it could have been worse. It missed a bit of inuendo en double entendre from PaulineB to be completely off scale.

Group of people on the pontoon: skipper is the one with the toolbox.

Re: Oh dear.

Well....my Regal 2150 actually has headlights, also integral wing mirrors, and flared 'wings' on the hull...does that count? /forums/images/icons/cool.gif /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Re: ah well

unfortunately, lots of us have got boats with 200 horsepower and have spent far longer than 1000 hours onnem, and as for going like stink...we're stinkipotters to start with, no?

Despite the rather sycomphantic audience and co-presenters (you know the fat one and the small one) the show is mildly entertaining.

However I do believe that the written word suits JC better than the spoken word. For example his column in the Sunday Times is sometimes quite amusing.

If you think he gave Vauxhall a slating then you should have read what he said about Bristol this week. His description was that the car (Bristol) looked like he (Jeremy) had made it himself.
