Hi. Whilst looking for outboard oils, I came across this:

Engine Oil 1L 4 Stroke

SAE30 as opposed to the 10W30/10W40 Yamaha recommend, but it is API SE. Has anyone else used this? Is the consensus that it would be okay in my Yamaha F2.5A? At £4 and easily sourced, it's very tempting!

TIA!

Cars are 4 strokes.

Outboard engine oil can have more zinc additive than car engine (or newer inboard engines) because outboards don't have catalysts, which zinc can ruin. Whether zinc is important or not to an engine I don't know.
If it's just an outboard for short trips it won't make any difference. People run marine 4 strokes on car oils, including synthetics, without problems. Plenty of results on Google.

'Straight' oil can mean either monogragade as in SAE 30, or non-detergent, or both.
Detergent oil is what goes in your car, it's favoured for anything with a full flow oil filter.
Non detergent oil is supposed to leave the crud in the sump.
Opinion has it that you shouldn't chop and change between detergent and non-detergent oil.

If you've got a Yamaha outboard, the extra few quid to use what they recommend seems sensible.

Other opinions/factoids/faith systems are readily available.

Thanks for all the replies. It was the convenience of Toolstation that was appealing, more so than the price, as I already have shopping to do there! Thanks again all.

So what about back in the day when yer Villiers 2T was run on petrol and anything that resembled oil? Are we getting blackmailed?
