Re: Tools you didn\'t know you couldn\'t live without until you got one

What's all this bull$hit.
All you need is a knife and an axe.
That goes especially with electronics!

Accessory to Bosch scraper

To get layers of antifoul off it's best to ues Tungsten carbide scraper blades. Even then you have to sharpen them from time to time with a diamond sharpener.
In the Bosch catalog they go under the name of Hardmetall and Axminster can get them to order I dont think they keep them in stock.

I have a Super 7, but an older (WW2 vintage) 9 inch South Bend looks crude, but is the dogs doo-dahs with taper turning, lever operated collets and a gearbox, so the Myford hardly ever gets used these days.

The other most useful tools are a home built horizontal mill, and a metal cutting bandsaw.

Well with out a doubt a Mattock, it is without a doubt the least well known of garden tools and I would never be witout one, however it has absolutly no finction on a boat. Well I suppose it might do as an emmergency kedge.

Re: Tools you didn\'t know you couldn\'t live without until you got one

Ive got a thingy that I’ve had for ages…it’s about 10mm wide and sort of long and spirally wound with a continuous hole that runs from end to end … It`s about 2 foot long and there’s a spring loaded grabber runs through the hole from top to bottom…one end has a red button on it and the other end (known as the lower end ) has a grabber with three prongs on…it’s marvellous, …when the red button on the top is pressed (usually with your thumb but you can use a forefinger if you are left handed) the grabber opens up as if by magic and it is then possible with a little practice to close it over an inanimate object…then …and this is the clever bit …when you release the red button on the top (which is spring-loaded remember) the prongs close around the inanimate object like an octopus clutching it’s prey…the stuff you are lifting can then be drawn from the bilge or elsewhere….remembering to use the release button at the end to let it get away.

I got it from the pound shop..I can`t remember how much it cost but it wasn`t dear.

You big girl. You don't need a knife, an axe should do almost everything.

Top Quality Gaffer Tape, no question. Especially the stuff that spreads its sticky morass of adhesive long after the Cloth bit has been eaten by UV.

Re: Tools you didn\'t know you couldn\'t live without until you got one

I often find the most usefull tool is the one my brother-in-law has just bent beyond usefulness.
Yesterday it was a delicate little screwdriver.

Extra joints between elbow and wrist, all 360deg u/js. Grip strenghts raised to that of a decent Mole wrench. Must be available as Citroen have always implied this by their engine design and installation philosophy.

Fein multitool!! Absolutely brilliant bit of kit! I dont know how I ever managed to do woodwork without one!
Plus a router, boy does that save some work! Makes things look much more proffesional as well.

Re: Tools you didn\'t know you couldn\'t live without until you got one

It's a known fact that proper men only need 2 tools:

Gaffer tape - for things that move but shouldn't
WD40 - for things which should move but don't

Anything else, including the axe, is a luxury!

There is an old saying on ships .... not the altered RN version - but the real one : >

If it moves - grease it ... If it doesn't - paint it.

SWMBO, ideal tool for fettling all sorts of jobs.
Works by remote voice command. Can even be operated down the phone!

Doesn't work too well on tight jar tops but us usually easy to service.

Downside, very expensive to maintain!

Re: Accessory to Bosch scraper

Yup. Tungsten carbide scraper. Old varnish, wood that needs smoothing before varnishing, old antifoul, unwanted club names on the stern - all come off a treat.

Made a big mistake this week, taking advice from a man who caught me scraping off old antifouling. "Don't do that", he said "just a little rub with wet and dry is all I did." Tried wet and dry, kept having to change the water, settled on a dry sander connected to a vacuum cleaner, got nice smooth surface, great. Then disaster - attempting to roll on antifouling (that costs as much as gold), great flakes of old antifoul start pealing off. Should have stuck with the scraper.
