Tools you didn\'t know you couldn\'t live without until you got one

My latest is a crawler - the thing mechanics lie on when working under cars. I reckon it halved the time to scrape the antifoul off Jissel. A new essential for the owner of a bilge keeler! (Now in Aldi for £12!)

Others include an electric scraper - I'd hate to scape the hull without one!

The cordeless drill and the workmate are other definite candidates, but old news now.

What are yours?

G clamps, sash clamps, and a 8lb sledge ! (none of this metric stuff, doesn't weigh nearly as much !)

Bent/unbent (????) coathanger for poking in all sorts of bilgey places, flexible claw thing that looks like a Borg implant for picking up screws in awkward places (magnets on sticks no good for stainless),assorted bent paper clips for picking teeth, testing lightbulbs with battery etc, and brown envelopes for making waterpump gaskets. Plus about 300lbs of assorted pikey crap that might come in useful....one day.

Small Stanley screwdriver with rubber handle. Does electrical things, small screws and cross-cuts, poking about with, holes through rope for a mouse, gimble. Just seems to get more than its fair share of attention. Keep it on the nav table not in the tool kit!

Draper now do a righted handed thurble grip thribley but only with the helical mount sprocket.

What I've always wanted for boat work is a magic finger that will morph on command into a screwdriver, open ended spanner, box spanner torque wrench, electrical tester, etc, etc.

An intelligent ferret capable of pulling halyards though masts, or cables behind panelling would be very useful too.

A really decent adjustable spanner (10"). One which the jaws don't flop about on.

And my Stanley Magnum screwdriver collection!

Impact driver and lead mallet. The driver has enabled me to remove loads of stubborn screws over the years without any damage.

Without a doubt it has got to be the sanding kit I bought at the Portsmouth Boat Show - saved me £s on discs and days of effort! Result - more time sailing!

My Myford ML7 I got it about 38 years ago saved me 10 fold the £350 I paid for it. Not only that it has earned me £££££ss as well.
All those bits on Boats that just need a bit removing to make it fit or a clean and polish or a new one from scratch.

Looks handy, but SWMBO would be a bit upset if I were to install one in the saloon, or the aft cabin!!

£34 new in 1946

The Draper is rather flimsy compared to the original Acme-Armstrong steam version
