a hearty thanks to all the posts regarding the good and the bad about honing our precious chisels and the like to the peak of operational perfection

after reading loads of threads, some old some new, I set about my chisels, finishing them off on a lovely old proper wetstone inherited from my grandad

the results were superb, slicing through oak like butter, and I can't wait to use them in earnest

so good were the results in fact that unfortunately I'll now have wait a couple of weeks until the are taken stitches taken out!

Funny that, I was intending to come back to the sharpening debate.

I'm hopless with a grind stone, I had been looking for the Rexon grinder on ebay for about 2 years, but they were selling for about 60 quid with postage which I thought too dear.

Last week one was listed about 45 mins drive away for £30 buy it now so I bought it.

I had a quick go with a very messed up chisel, its quite slow, the guide seems too high at its lowest level but the results were very good indeed.

A bit more practice and I think it will be very handy.

Good show.
If I were you I would now buy 2 or 3 cheapo chisels, sharpen them in the same way and use them for all those jobs that tend to ruin your best gear.
......ie scraping paint, opening anti fouling tins, stirring tea etc.

of all the various bits n bobs I read, the single most important bit of kit involved IMHO is the donkeys years old wetstone.

I've tried a few modern stones of various origins (ultimately all probably chinese!) and all were hopeless (although that might of been me as well!)

I'm keeping me eyes peeled around car boots and junk markets for another one one

just watch your fingers afterwards, the doctor that stitched mine did comment on what a nice clean cut it was. made me feel loads better!!

I needed that!

PS I have cheapo chisels and thats about all they are good for. I would hate to put expensive ones on board and find them rusty the next winter! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
