I have a Sadler 25, which I thought were specifically designed with the AZAB and Atlantic racing in mind. However, when my partner and I decided to go to the Azores in August, we were told by our insurance company that the boat did not meet the criteria laid down by the underwriters. They were happy to let us keep the 3rd party insurance, but wanted us to call them when we were 200nm offshore to suspend the hull policy.

We made it to the Azores, took 19 days, 4 becalmed and 1 hove to in a storm. The boat handled it fantastically (the storm - better than me!), and we had a great time for 1 month in the Azores.

I think we did really well including 1 24hr run of 120 miles.

We're now in Gibraltar (took 11 days).

But if we wanted to join the ARC or the Blue Water, there would be no chance. Not enough electrical equipment - no EPIRB, etc. We have a GPS and use paper charts.

We had the most fantastic time of our lives so far. Can't wait to cross the Atlantic

Great post. Just the sort of stuff us dreamers dream of doing.

And all in a Sadler 25 !

Best of luck in your future adventures.

What do you expect from the RCYC, all down to risk assessment.

Our Halcyon 27 called in the Azores on her way back from the West Indies on route for Gib and the Med, before coming back to the UK with the previous owners.

Now it to appears to small.

Ken will need a Satphone to find out what scrape jimi's got himself into recently. I'll be the wine correspondent. Douglas can cater. Hump will take loads of pictures we can't see. You'll try to get someone else to take over steering that giant bus of yours. Dammit, I'll have a go at steering. We'll be in the Atlantic. What can I hit? It will be fun.

aberdeen ... bring some arbroath smokies wi' ye ...

A wireless enthusiast was anxious to hear 2BD [2BD was the first BBC station to begin broadcasting from Aberdeen, in 1922]. He tried over and over again to adjust the coils of his receiver for the correct wavelength. Finally a friend came to the rescue. He asked for a money box and rattled it in front of the new-fangled wireless set. Instantly a voice was heard, saying "Aberdeen Calling, Aberdeen Calling".

It's on record that an Aberdonian once gave a waiter a tip - but the horse didn't win. Which is on a par with the story of the Aberdonian who, spying a threepenny piece in Picadilly, stepped out to pick it up and was run over by a passing motor. The Coroner's verdict was "Death by Natural Causes".

One Aberdonian on a visit to a friend in London over stayed his welcome. It was getting towards Christmas and his host thought a kindly hint might speed him away. "Don't you think," he said, "that your wife and family will want you to be with them at Christmas?" "Man," replied the Aberdonian, "I believe you're richt. It's rale thochtfu' o' you. I'll just send for them."

A charabanc accident took place in Union Street. Several of the injured were lying about, waiting for attention. A native came on the scene and asked one of them: "Has the Insurance man been round?" "Not yet," was the reply. "Ah, weel," he said, "I'll just lie doon aside ye!"

Re: Lateral thinking James!!

>>> Sheila is of the opinion that I'm far to old, fat and slow for a real transatlantic sail, and she might well be right, but I reckon I could sell her on letting me go on a cruise to the Azores,,,,,,,,,,, solo. :)

I'd work on a Plan B. You don't want to be sailing double-handed with a substandard crew again. I'd start now trying to persuade Alex's mum that he's old enough to be let out after his bedtime!

"persuade Alex's mum that he's old enough to be let out after his bedtime!"

I'm working on it, belive me!
I suspect his Dad might might find him too Able a Seaman to be loaned out will-he-nill-he to any passing Uncle, just yet.

It's the New Zealand stuff I like. Obviously, if I was a man of means with a 40ft boat on the Solent I'd be drinking domaine botteld Chablis all the time. But I'm just a poor little East Coaster who has to take what he can get.

Great idea! Are you suggesting a max length. I have a 1955 Hillyard 32 ft.

Pencil me in. 30' Hillyard.
IF I can get time away from work, get the boat to Lymington, get crew... blah, blah.
Getting over the obstacles is part of the challenge, innit?
