My lego boats never did float. Water gets between the bricks, and then it fills up more on one side than the other and over it goes.

He'll have to break it up to get the lego back in the box when his mum makes him tidy his room....

Given the price of lego it would probabley have been cheaoper and easier to build a 'proper' model

(and no left over bits on the floor to hurt you when u stand on them like an upturned plug!)
