The old Raytheon 390 GPS used to talk to the Laptop, the Autopilot and the Radar until it decided that it had had enough and went to the great coordinates in the sky.

The Kelvin Hughes radio is also getting tired and is not DSC whatevered (enabled?)

The Garmin 76 I bought works a treat and talks to the laptop and is powered from the boat's system (ships batteries sounds a bit industrial to me)
I got the dedicated wires so it just plugs in and goes and its very simple and I don't like messing with things that work fine

I thought I might get a DSC radio this winter

Should I get another GPS unit and wire it to the radio, GPS and radar or is this OTT?

K.I.S.S.

Odd that you mention that. By coincidance today I noticed that the arming hole in the base of my 7lb lead has all but closed up. I must drill it out and then interface the whole thing with a new lead line..
note to self: buy 10 of 2B pencils,,,,,,,,,,

It\'s good to talk

I find talking to my plants produces upto 17.5% improvement in growth. This year one of my runner beans was nearly 40 cm!

Hope this helps.

Re: K.I.S.S.

Ian Why would you need 10 2b pencils to arm the lead?

Buy 5 Break them in half and hammer them in./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

i still carry a lead as back up(no tallow for it though)not had a lot of use lately though.

On the KISS principle am I the only one that cant see much sense in an electronic wind speed and direction instrument on a cruising yacht?

speaking of which, the cross hairs in my Aldis have perished - I've tried replacing with my own hair but it is too thin - anyone know what the original spec. was ???

Re: K.I.S.S.

Sorry, just freeflow thought,,,,,,,, lead line... lead... lead pencil... ohmygod I'm down to only three pencils in the chart table draw,,,,,,, see? I like the Derwent pencils from the Lake District and only know of one shop locally that stock them. so there we are.
And no, I don't feel the need for wind instruments either, or for that matter, a speed log. Both are only good for bar stories, " Off the clock at 60 knots of breeze and still doing 10.43 knots to windard", that sort of thing. One of my Walker logs (I have spares)will give me a good idea of speed for navigation.

Re: K.I.S.S.

i think the speed display on the log has at least one worthwile use in that you can demonstrate the folly of sailing too hard pressed or too close winded.

But wind speed/direction only tells you what should be blindingly obvious .Maybe on a racing boat for deciding which of 10 headsails to use it may be usefull but on a cruising boat?

We only recently fitted a GPS .maybe we are lucky to have only once or twice been caught out in thick fog.

On one memorable occasion after motoring through the fog into Porlock Bay and anchoring in 5 or 6 meters at low water we were amazed as the fog lifted that we were surrounded by about 4 other yachts in a half mile circle.I thought the voices we heard were from in the harbour!(i dont claim any great skill in our arrival ,Its a big bay and Iwas pleased to have found the bay at all.)

Re: K.I.S.S.

Sailed for many years without any instruments at all - even our log was dodgy. This included many channel crossings, trips across Biscay etc. Now have full monty, including wind instruments and wouldn't want to be without them again. I reckon I get much better performance from my boat using them than I ever did without.

If I were fitting a DSC set, I wouldn't want to rely on a hand-held GPS to feed it so would buy a replacement for the R390. Then you also have a backup GPS/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I am shocked and amazed at the flippant replies to this quandary that, in desperation, you have posed to this, in most part, knowledgeable body of forumites. Maybe the knowledgeable bodies are still in their pits replenishing brain energy.

Q1 <I thought I might get a DSC radio this winter>

Q2 <Should I get another GPS unit and wire it to the radio, GPS and radar or is this OTT?>

The answer to Q1 dictates the answer to Q2. If you embark on the supposition posed in Q1, then not to allow the instrument to work to its full potential would be foolish. So the answer to Q2 must be “Yes”. But if you decide not to make the investment in this high tech communication device, why would you want to drill holes and remove head linings etc.

May I humbly suggest another course of action to dissipate this surplice wealth. Buy an EPRIB and if you still have funds available, buy a ‘Galileo ready’ GPS.

Be aware that ‘Galileo ready’ receivers will not have been fully tested...

I'd forget about Galileo for now (2008 earliest, and that's if there are no more EU squabbles) and make sure that the GPS receiver is SBAS compatible (WAAS, EGNOS etc).

<hr width=100% size=1>

Even more important is that the equipment is user compatible .. and unfortunately that just about rules everything out apart from perhaps a cowbell!

Re: Galileo

True.
Two test satellites are planned for launch in 2005 with the primary function of securing the frequencies to be used by Galileo.
Although the frequencies themselves are decided, the actual signal structure on these various frequencies is still undecided.

I think thats a bit harsh on the man who has ploughed a lone furrow and single-handedly pioneered the innovative COMTULOR system (Claymore Outstanding Mooring Technique Using Lots Of Rope).
We'll see who has the last laugh.

this is only true where you agree with yourself.. if you start disagreeing with yourself this tends to cause confusion and consternation.. It is important that Left and Right Hemispheres are using the same protocol.
