Re: More info re wine barrels

Concise OED agrees with the definition of tun - including the 252 gallons bit. Last year I retired as steward at the National Trust watermill and Victorian workshops at Cotehele. Standing outside one of the buildings is a huge barrel called a half tun which was used to bring sherry from Spain, and it is reputed to hold 126 gallons! Probably Victorian.
You can pick up a mooring for free at Cotehele Quay, or if the tide serves lie alongside Crane Quay. Small contribution to the box in the maritime museum if staying overnight. A very pleasant half mile walk through the woods brings you to The Mill where you will see the aforesaid barrel, or half tun.
Visit the small maritime museum on the Quay, an outpost of the National Maritime Museum, also see the Tamar barge Shamrock just back from the Plymouth Classic Boat Rally.

Re: More info re wine barrels

Thanks for your info. I have seen the various dictionary definitions of tun/ton but I still don't follow the use of these things. Were they fixed in the vessel as tanks or were they loaded in? How did they do it?
