Tomos Outboards

Got an outboard that's on it's last legs and someone's ofered me a used Tomos for £300 (9.9hp) in good nick. Are they any good? What about spares and stuff? Any experience, I've only ever seen one and that was running, but as a reference for an engine this isn't the best.

I will probably be trading up to a 4stroke as soon as money available so for now cheap is good, but I do prefer cheap and excellent.

I dont have any experience of them ,but why not see if you can take it out for a trial and observe how well it starts cold and then hot, and then restart.
It seems cheap enough although not a mainstream brand.

They're made in Slovenia just ten miles from me. You see a lot of them around here (and Tomos mopeds too) and they have a reputation for being solid and reliable. I could probably find a supplier for spare parts to deliver in the UK if you should find it necessary.

I had a 4.8 model some years ago and I had no problems with it. It was extremely economical, would probably work if you brweathed on it after having a couple of Vodka's! Turn off the fuel supply - as one should with a two-stroke outboard - and it would still continue to work for several minutes. I believe that the original 'technology' originated at Ailsa Craig but I might be wrong there. Good luck.

iv'e got an old ailsa craig 4hp, its so old it has scales! works a treat. theres a bloke near me that deals in service items and spares so not too many problems there.

wots wrong with your old one, is it repairable.if so i know someone who'll be interested in taking alook.
