Tom Cunliffe - Suffolk Beach Yawls

Loved the story of the challenge to the schooner America. And her refusal to compete.
The yawls are very similar to the Azores Whale boats which once again carry monster sails, have no keel or ballast and sailed by up to a dozen persons. I always feel in those days that it was a fair fight between the whalers and the whales.

As an aside we race models of the Southwold Yawls on Woodbridge pond once a month. They are also raced on Southwold pond.. This is free sailing, start at one end of the pond and let them go and catch them at the other end. The original model called Black Joke is in the maritime museum at Southwold.
All of ours have been hand built, some of timber and the newer ones of GRP.

We visited the Sailors reading room at Southwold recently & i spent some time looking at the model of the Bittern. It is well worth visiting the Lifeboat museum down by the harbour entrance where resides the Sailing lifeboat Alfred Corry.
Its a crying shame that they are all gone. Anyone fancy building one?

Interesting but is it just me? But I can’t stand his droning voice. Just like the very ageing David Attenborough and DylanWinter.

Maybe it’s just your username.
Personally I could listen to Tom Cunliffe droning on all day long - as long as we had a beer and a few sandwiches.
