I have a Jabsco Brydon Standard toilet - manual operation - fitted. It is leaking from the top of the pump when you pump up and down.

My question is, is it worth paying £30 ish for a seal kit when a complete new unit is about £130.

i.e. how easy is it to change the seals etc. and what success rate can I expect?

The lid on my unit is also getting a bit scruffy (the whole thing is proibably over 20 years old)

Thanks

Succes rate will be OK but I wouldn't bother, just replace it with the new version that also includes a locking mechanism to prevent backflow.
After replacing you have a new shiny one with a new lid and, more importantly, a new pump.

A very cheap and effective repair is to simply put an O ring on the shaft under the top. You will also need a stainless washer underneath the O ring to stop it sliding down the shaft. Fixed both my leaking loo pumps that way.

Replace the whole unit with a Porta Potti, then you'll have a holding tank & be able to use it in marinas. Just an idea, I've just replaced mine with one...

My previous boat had a similar leak when I bought her 25 years ago. I got the kit to replace bits but found the only part worn was a small lip seal.

I kept the other parts as spares (joker valve etc.) read the part no. off the lip seal and bought four new ones from Bearing Services Ltd. The lip seals were replaced every 3-4 years and then I bought another half dozen.

As far as I can remember, they were pretty standard parts that were cheap and easy to source.

The lip seal I'm talking about is fitted inside the top of the pump cylinder. Replacement usually took less than 30 mins. so not a big job. I'd suggest looking at your lip seal and consider getting a few spares.
