Toilet Problems

Well after spending the best part of yesterday taking the Jabsco electric toilet apart beacuse it wouldn't discharge to the holding tank, I discovered that the waste pipe to the holding tank was in fact blocked. This was due to a build up of 'scale' of whatever builds up with a sea toilet. I did manage to unblock it with a flexible drain auger.

The question is what can I put down the toilet to stop a further build up of this 'scale' and to desolve what it left in the pipes. This has occured over a 3.5 year period and only fluids have ever been put down the toilet!

Thanks

I respectfully suggest thay you read some of the other threads which have been running in recent days on this topic.

Even do a search and read some of the many posts from the less recent past.

Basically though periodic flush through with something acid. A cup full of white vinegar before leaving the boat is often suggested. More drastic measures include the use of hydrochloric acid often available as "brick cleaner". Be aware of the possible effects on nylon skin fittings and metal components.

A permanent cure we found was to fit an auxillary fresh water tank for flushing use. We fitted a Plastimo flexible tank seven years ago and never a problem since.

Have a firend who connected to the main water tank but I didn't fancy that but he hasn't had aby "side" effects.

The scale arises from the reaction of urine with salt water, no solids are involved! Apart from the use of an acid to reduce the scaling, the rate of build up can be reduced by thorough flushing of the whole length of the waste pipe. Wtih a manual pump that means lots of strokes; with an electric pump perhaps running it for longer than seems reasonable?

A search will get you lots more information, also here

Agree with willow36. I did experience a similar blockage on a seawater flushed toilet in the past. My last 2 boats have had freshwater flushed toilets and I've never had a prob. How about flushing a bucket or 2 of fresh water thru them occasionally?
