Toilet problem...

We're having fun with our jabsco electric toilets this weekend. It got blocked and so I've taken everything apart and cleaned the macerator. The problem is that while the pump now pumps the toilet water strongly out the waste pipe attached to the toilet it seems to stop at the connection to the pipe that goes to the holding tank. So the toilet won't drain.... Anyone have any good ideas please?

It sounds like it's blocked at the connection to the tank, remove pipe and inspect, should be easy to clear.
 
i have had these problems lots of times as these toilets are cr8p literally, I think that it will be blocked where the 1 inch pipe from the back of the toilet meets the larger pipe that goes to the holding tank. there is a reducer joint there and if its the same as mine its made from a rubber type materiel and it crushes where the jubilee clips are and this is where it blocks well it was on mine

I removed the joining piece and I also removed the plastic u bend that was fitted to mine on my fairline I then purchased a decent quality hard plastic type reducer to join the smaller and larger pipes together without the u bend installed

I also lowered the height at which the pipe was fitted to the hull for syphoning reasons I worked out how low I could go above the water line and fixed the pipes at a height I was happy with

since I have done this my toilets have been loads better but I stand by what I said I think these jabsco electric toilets are a rubbish design as I have spent soooo much time stripping and cleaning out but at least I think I have improved mine now and they flush much quicker since I did my mod

if its still blocked what I did was attach a section of my own hose pipe to the hose on the pontoon then I attached this with gaffer tape to the 1 inch pipe that comes off the back of toilet then I turned the hose on full and it pushed the blockage past the area it was stuck and I was then able to strip the toilet without fear of any nasty stuff coming back at me

then remove my small bit of hose (2 m length) I fitted to the marina hose and throw away

What happens if you set the diverter valve to 'sea', is it still blocked, or will it pump out ok? That would tell you where in the topology the blockage is.
 
Not quite sure where you mean it's blocking, but it could be scale. What happens is scale builds up on the inside of the pipes over the years, and when you work on the toilets the pipes flex and the scale breaks away in lumps, then stops at the next point where the diameter reduces, eg a connector, sea cock etc.
 
I think lanerboy might have it. There is exactly the set up he describes as the waste pipe from the loo is a different diameter from the waste pipe and so there's a connector to link them. Jubilee clips on all the pipes to attach them to the connector. That's where the water won't pass through. Just need to summon up the will to take the loo apart again....but that sounds like it may well be the solution - to swap that out. Top stuff, thanks. And jtb, yes we switched to sea outlet and same problem....
 
Shawn, can I ask you where you got the new plastic reducer from? I'm going mad searching plumbing sites and not really having a lot of joy! Many thanks!!
 
A, it is in vetus catalogue here http://www.vetus.com/waste-water-systems/accessories.html?p=3 You don't see them on eBay or other mail order chandlery sites for example. There are plenty of mail order Vetus stockists in UK

Ref the plan you mentioned to swap for Tecma, here are a few comments having done it (at time of delivery) on my sq58

1. You need the full size Tecma Silence plus, and the soft close lid upgrade is nice
2. Footprint of Tecma slightly smaller than Jabsco. You have to fill in some screw holes in the teak floor. Easy with teak plugs, or I have some s/s polished studs you can glue on
3. Tecma has 1.5 inch waste pipe, Jabsco has smaller. If there is a step up midway along your pipe that means your black tank has 1.5 inch connections, hence you are good to go and you just need to buy a length of 1.5 inch pipe from each WC to the tank. If the tank connections are smaller than 1.5 inch you have to buy new tank connections but Lee Sanitation or Vetus sell them and they are easy to fit to the tank
4. You will need to do a trick to fit the Tecma to the "wall" behind it on the Sq58. There is a release angle in the wall. I'll show you how they did mine. Don't worry about this
5. Some installers notice that the Jabsco has a flush water valve similar to Tecmas so they use that and don't bother using the Tecma valve. Don't let them! The Tecma valve works better
6. The control panel for the Tecma JUST fits in the same hole as the Jabsco control switches, so that all works out nicely if the installer is careful.
7. I'd recommend you hire Rodney to do the work. He's very good. I'll give you his details. e400/day but worth it, and I expect this is 1.5 days work
 
Thanks everyone! Super helpful as always. I'll look to get the right kit to repair the jabsco in case the tecma job gets delayed.
