Toilet foul air

We traced the post flush bad smell to the air vent from the toilet in the side of the hull.
The cure is very simple…if we close the pilot’s door the smell doesn’t get in the cabin…case closed.
However I do sometimes feel sorry for people who might be walking on the dock when we moor alongside.
We only put organic toilet cleaner and don’t even put toilet paper in it.
Putting in fresh water flush is on my list of improvements…but it’s not a priority at this time.
I suppose I could put a Stainless Steel cowling to direct the odour downwards
Any suggestions ?

Firstly, are you sure it is toilet smell?
Sometimes grey water can smell if the grey water sumps aren't cleaned regularly.
Water from the showers etc.

If it IS from the toilet, is it from a vent from a holding tank?
If so, you should have a carbon filter in that vent that will filter out any smell.

Going to the boat tomorrow to inspect the system....first to see if there is already a filter that just needs changing...or...how much access do I have to retrofit a filter

Access will be fine if you just drop your trousers first. Attack the problem at source.
The smell is completely unrelated to what goes in...in fact just flushing for the sake of flushing gives that foul smell at the vent. Tomorrow all will be revealed !🤔😳

I wouldn't be surprised if one was already fitted. If not, make sure it is not in a place that can get wet from either waste in the tank or water through the breather, as that knackers the filter.

There’s really only two places where a filter setup can be accessible.....in a service locker in the bathroom and above the black water tank under the hatch. Of course, being Beneteau it could be somewhere that needs disassembly of the boat.... I don’t recall seeing it to be honest....but I’m going to the boat today for a look see

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Beneteau don't fit a tank vent filter as standard equipment. Sunseeker don't fit them on their boats and simply vent the tank directly to the outside. When I asked about this I was told it shouldn't really be necessary with fresh water flushing and with a holding tank in "good" condition emptied regularly.

I fitted a Dometic filter to one of my early boats which had a separate black water tank. However, on the more recent boats with combined grey/black water tanks I haven't bothered. Instead, I use Clinazur 609 waste water treatment regularly and it seems to work.

It's incredibly unpleasant when you're in a port, enjoying lunch in the cockpit and the neighbouring boat flushes their toilet creating a cloud of noxious holding tank gas. If roles were reversed, I'd be really embarrassed, so I think it's polite to have a filter on the holding tank breather :)

I modified my old cartridge so that it could be refilled with charcoal pellets every other season for pennies instead of paying out £££ to dometic for a new one

Ok…I’m on the boat and have checked everything that a reasonably sized person with double joints could access…and I can’t see one.
There is room on top of the tank to install an inline filter. I could make one, buy one retail or online….any with a one inch fitting on each end will suffice

Be careful to install it in the breather and not in the pimp out line.

Ok…just ordered the filter…should arrive next week…€42.90
For that price it is not worth making my own
