hi all new here just got this pontoon boat with a tohatsu 18 hp 2 stroke got it to run and had it i a tank to run it when i had it running i had water coming out the pee hole but there was also water coming out of the housing at the shift rod is this normal when you run a motor in a small tank ?

Welcome to the forum.
I assume that you are in USA as you mention pontoon boat. Water coming out from the gear lever area doesn't sound correct and might mean an engine strip down. I assume though that you hadn't overfilled the tank with water? Even then it does seem that the that leg could be blocked. My problem is that I haven't worked on a Tohatsu 18hp engine but assume that it is similar as other 2 strokes.

Can you be more precise about where the water is coming out?
Surely not from around the gear shift lever as Boothook seems to think you mean?
Unfortunately , as a new member you wont be able to post photographs but perhaps you can explain by reference to the diagrams in the parts book at https://www.tohatsu.us/docs/pdf/Parts Catalog M9.9B2-12C2-15B2-18C2 (1986) - (00221029-0).pdf

I assume you mean in the area indicated below ?
