Tohatsu Charging

I have just bought a project which comes with a Tohatsu 9.8 hp manual start outboard , however the outboard has an electric cable coming from it 4 core . what is it for .

1 electric start ?

2 charging circuit ?

how do i tell , and what is each wire for ?

I would presume is could either be preperation wiring for the installation of a starter or could possibly be hooked up to a small flywheel driven alternator.

A closer look inside should help you determine this. A multi-meter attached to the wiring in AC mode selected should verify if there is any output. Remember to look for an AC voltage not Dc.
