Hi all,

I have a Glastron SSV-167. I am looking at a getting a second hand engine. I have three choices all 2 stroke.
Suzuki 65hp, Tohatsu 90hp and a Yamaha 115hp.

We use the boat for water skiing with the kids. I like the suzuki as I have had one before but feel it would be under powered.
The Yamaha 115 I think is to heavy for the boat.

The Tohatsu appeals but I have no experience with this make of engine. I am a bit of a DIY mechanic for basic items, impeller changes, carb overhaul etc.

Can anyone give an opinion of the Tohatsu 90?

Thanks
Andy

Tohatsu 90 is a really good motor, used when I started racing in the Offshore 1.3 class before moving to the 2 litre class. The ngine is the good part, we removed the automixing and premixed the fuel in the tank to take away the possibility of a failure in that area. I appreciate this is easy in a raceboat because we started with an empty tank every time.
Anyway the only weak spot on those motors was the upper mount. Looks like a Hump Backed Bridge. They do crack under strain after a while, to the extentthat people were making them from steel to try and stop it, butthen of course the bolts pulled out and most of the boats had been heli-coiled once or twice. For leisure use that shouldnt be as much of a problem. Very simple engines, not as high revving as the 90 Yamaha, but a bit more grunt.
Drilling and wire locking those top mount bolts does help as well.

Hope that helps.

Hi
Having just bought and sold a lovely ssv167 (bought for the engine on it)...I can tell you that it performed amazingly with the 150 it had on it, but was too big for it. The 150 is now on my wee project boat and the new owner put his 80hp Yam on it. It’s now pretty sluggish and underpowered for what it probably deserves. The 115 would be perfect.
Apart from anything else...if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a Yam 115 v4. Let there be no doubt...they are one of the best engines ever made.
