Tohatsu 9.8hp 2-Stroke

Hi. I recently saw a Tohatsu 9.8hp 2-stroke for sale and the plate with the serial number had Mariner 8 on it. Is the Tohatsu 9.8hp based on the Mariner 8hp of that era? Whatever year that would have been. I was thinking that it’d be easier and cheaper to get the Mariner 8 if it’s going to be the same weight as the 9.8. It’s the lightness of the Tohatsu that’s attracting me to it.
 
Mercury Marine is a division of Brunswick Corporation and many of the smaller Mercury Outboards are just rebranded Tohatsu Engines. In addition, the entire line of Nissan outboards are rebranded Tohatsus.11 Dec 2017

That’s interesting- it would infer the 8hp could be tweaked (different carb?) to get a couple extra go out of it…

Suggest you get the serial number and phone Tohatsu UK, they will tell you what it is, most parts are the same for 8 & 9.8 so both look alike. Engine will be same weight but what HP do you need?

That generally means that a 10 weights the same as a 15 which is how the Tohatsu 9.8 became so popular. It’s essentially a 10hp engine that weighs 26kg, the same weight as a modern four stroke 4hp. This popularity means they’re still expensive second hand and they sell quickly.

I was thinking along the lines of if there’s a Mariner 8 two stroke that weighs 26kg then that would be cheaper and less desirable than the Tohatsu 9.8 and that would do me quite nicely.

Sounds like a plan.
The Mariner 8 is probably twin cylinder so will be smoother than the 4/5/6 hp which will be single cylinder. I had the 9.8 on a 20' displacement hull and
it was more than enough. The bigger 2 strokes will of course be much thirstier so range might be an issue. I'm assuming you want the outboard for a yacht rather than a rib. 26kg is still alot to heave about if only used for commuting .
 
I looked in to this as well and came across a suggestion that you cannot easily uprate the 8hp to 9.8hp. it's not just the carb, there are other differences (e.g. reed valves) as well. Cannot remember where I read this but it sounded believable.
 
Going back to this, when you look at the new Tohatsu 9.8s for sale they say that there’s only charging on the electric start models. Surely a pull start model can drive an alternator too or I have seen some smaller outboards that have a 12v charging/lighting output from a coil. Can anyone tell me anything about that?

It's available to fit on the pull start ones....speak to Tohatsu and buy the parts....I just did it on a Yamaha 9.9hp
 
Could the seller have been keyword spamming?

AFAIK there's only one Tohatsu 9.8 two-stroke, and it has a somewhat distinctive shape.
