Tohatsu 3.5 2-stroke problem. Anyone pointme in the right direction please?

Had similar a couple of weeks ago on same engine, engine started OK (on last years fuel) but would only run properly at low revs: at full throttle revs peaked then slowed, up-down-up-down etc.
Cleaned carb, no change.
New fuel, no change.
New plug, no change,
Removed tank and cleaned tiny filter, no change.

Eventually a final ultra-thorough carb clean with a soak in "carb cleaner" I went out and bought fixed it.

I was being a muppet.

The first time I started it, we had problems due to old fuel, so stripped and cleaned the carb, put new fuel in the tank, etc. The revving problem came after I'd put it back together (but assumed it was the same problem as before that hadn't been cured).

What it actually was, was me being a dick. When I re-built the carb, I dropped the needle valve into the jet, and then put the copper lever in over it (without even noticing that the needle value has an undercut in it that hooks into the lever).

So since then, I've had the carb apart 2 further times, had the tap and filter out and cleaned them, and put a new spark plug in, all with no change (because every time I put the carb back together I made the same stupid mistake).

Anyway, I was just putting it back together for the final time before giving up and taking it to a dealer, when I went "oh look, there's a slot in the lever, oh yes, and there's also an undercut in the pin. I bet that fits in there". And the fault was solved.

You are all duly requested to give me a forum slap for complete muppetry of the first order.

The important thing is you are now very familiar with the 'works' and even more importantly - problem solved, so well done- we all make mistakes :)
