Its the fastnet this year again and I have to sort out my toe rail...
Last time we wrapped rubber around it and it was alright but messy.
I am thinking about cutting the lip off carefully but realize I will compromise the anodizing. I assume it will go black, has anybody got any advise as to what I should do.
The other thought was to roll it over but I a worried it will break as well as collect rubbish under it and be really messy.

You wish to sail across the Irish sea with half the crew sitting out on the toe rail? Could I please borrow them afterwards - I have lots of uses for such people!
 
We used to cut lengths of rigid plastic pipe to fit each section between the stanchions, then hacksaw a longitudinal cut and press fit over the toerail. If worried about spinnaker sheets catching and flipping sections off, you can always drill and lash at the ends.
Lightweight, no water absorbtion, and eases the leg circulation.
Crew will still complain!
 
Is there enough room to fit a wedge of fairly rigid foam to the toe rail - so there is a gradual slope to the top? Maybe something about 6 inches wide and sloped from the deck to just above the height of the toerail. You could tie it on with bits of cord every so often. Downside would be that it is a potentiall tripping or slipping hazard (esp in the dark).
