Today's gale

Re: Today\'s gale

your 'coming round' will probably accelerate once the green taxes bite big holes your pockets ......... especially as ppl will eventually realise how much an infinitely minute practical effect they have of global conditions after causing so much anguish.

this latest tax on air travel is an unbelievable idiocy

Somebody had to say it. I was trying to refrain from sounding like Victor Meldrew again! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Today\'s gale

According to The Times yesterday, the weather that we and the states are now having is due to a kink in the jetstream. Similar to the weather that was experienced in 1922.

Re: Today\'s gale

cycling to work down Exhibition Rd in London this morning, I saw a builder's plank that had been blown off the scaffolding. It had impaled a car parked below: looked like a spooky Excalibur in the Rock from a distance. I feel sorry for the owner, but I am happy it was not my head. It would have been a nasty mess for the road sweepers to clean up what little gry matter is left splattered around.... /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Today\'s gale

Ohmigawd, what's that?

Sunshine, streaming in my window.... In January?

......must go out and look at the debris, shake my head, suck my teeth, then go down to the village local - 'Hop Pole' - and complain about something over a pint of Bass.

even my Disco was moved by a gust!

Ha!

I just landed in Schipol on an A330 from Minneapolis. Bumpiest approach I have ever had, much puking all around me.

The most amazing this was that just sitting on the ground the whole aircraft was shaking and vibrating.

Now stuck here and airport closed!

Re: Today\'s gale

Just been down the boat - everything ok on D pontoon in Chi marina ... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Strongest gust was only 41 knots .. so quite sheltered in there - but enough wind to heel most yachts over ... worth checking them fenders ... I added one and hoicked it up a bit so there would still be fender there when she's over on her side.... /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Today\'s gale

Still windy but has dropped condiserably down here on the Hampshire coast - and the sun's now shining! I went down to the cliff earlier and the sea was remarkable. I heard that gusts of 90knts were recorded at the Needless accross the bay and it really was somewhat blowy. With the hand brake released, the car was blown quite quickly backwards accross the car park - Luckily I caught up with her /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Wonderful driving through the New Forest with the wiondows and roof open! We had similar, if not more severe, conditions October before last (I think). I took Engima up the Beaulieu River to be taken out of the water and saw 68knts indicated on board. The highest I remeber being recrded in Christchurch Bay was 101.

Re: Today\'s gale

Give us a break, my parents had only just been born then!

According to the report, it was described as the year that didn't have a winter. Substantial snow fell in San Francisco where one Albert Einstein was visiting, he commented that if he'd wanted snow he would have stayed in Europe. New York was in the 70s for some time and it blew like hell over here for most of the winter.

Re: Today\'s gale

Update...not raining at the moment but wind gusting to 9 and possibly above..power on and off and we're losing substantial amounts of roof tiles (at work). No mobile signals either so I suppose the transmitter's blown down again!

Re: Today\'s gale

Update on Schiphol if anyone is interested - well not much else to do!

I am sitting in the lounge watching a row of big jets standing at the piers and just shaking in the wind. Sky is black, rain is horizontal. My plane to Manchester is still in Manchester.

They say that the aircraft could take-off, but they are shaking so much on the ground that they can't cater them!

But to cheer me up, I am sitting (with my Mac) next to a bunch of Microsoft employees, one of whom who can't get online. I just heard 'have you tried rebooting'!!!!!!!

Update 2 at 1450 uk time: Total whiteout for 5 mins then much clearer. Was that a front going through?

Re: Today\'s gale

"A321 Crosswind Rollar Coaster Ride"

Mmm, good decision to go round again, or maybe divert somewhere else entirely!

"A380 Crosswind Tests"

Damn clever, that new plane flies sideways.

"Boeing at Play"

Nah, not bumpy enough.

"Wide Body Bad Landing"

Breathalyse that pilot.

Re: Today\'s gale

Due to slates being blown off the roof the staff car parks here have been closed and evacuated, staff had to wear hard hats to go to their cars! Doors out are locked, its like being a 3rd class passenger on the Titanic:-)

St James' Hospital, Milton, Portsmouth. Staff, not patient, yet...

Re: Today\'s gale

NDBC showed hourly readings up to 46 kts. in Irish Sea.
Holyhead ferry cancelled yesterday evening.
Passing over Bristol Channel at 3pm. yesterday the sea looked roughish with a lot of white.
I pm news said gust of 99mph at Needles
