What’s pleasure to be at the Torbay air show , to see a Lancaster bomber and a Spitfire flying side by side was amazing . Being there are only 2 Lancasters left in the world flying and 54 Spitfire flying . Then we have had two days of Red Arrows and never get bored of seeing them .

We just came back from watching an air show....not on that scale....but still good. Saw a C-47 with invasion stripes....

Some years ago my wife and I walked down to Stokes Bay to watch the Red Arrows doing a display over the Solent.

We sat on a bench next an elderly lady and got talking.

I said I wondered where the Red Arrows were going next. She replied "Bristol", I think it was Bristol.

Then she described their programme for the next few days.

Seeing my surprise at her knowing this, she explained that her son was flying one of the planes.

"Around 1500 today/Sunday....

While wrestling with timber storage out front, the hard-to-mistake sound of multiple Adour turbofans approaching.... then, over the trees, first a 5- then a 4-ship of distinctive red BAe Hawks.

The Red Arrows.

En route back to RAF Brize Norton, most like, after a display down at Exeter. Quite made the spirits leap!

A long way back, I got a ride in one o' they. A Folland Gnat, with the Deputy Leader Al East in the driving seat, doing a practice display, over RAF St Mawgan, before a Full Display at Falmouth.

It was one of those 'in the wrong place at the right time' moments which punctuated my lowly career. Quite the most exhilarating way to be introduced to aerobatics, never mind formation aeros with the very best!

I was surprised to discover that several of the young 'first tourist' pilots on t'squadron were resentful and jealous as hell.... 'cos I was a nav.

So…,,when you say elderly….what exactly do mean by that ?

I assume that was the 100 anniversary thing at Hyères?
My friend in Aix invited me to that but I'm a bit to far away at the moment (in Roses), his son is a trainer at the airbase at Salon de Provence and I think the Patrouille de France and some of the others were flying from there.

Yes…,of course I couldn’t recognise most of the aircraft…

We were in Ramsgate before crossing to Dunkirk for the 85th anniversary of Operation Dynamo. Ramsgate put on a great show but the highlight for me was a short but memorable flying display put on by a Swordfish, Spitfire and a helicopter. The Spitfire was one of the best I've ever seen with the pilot putting if through it's paces. Just so emotional
