Tobermory - what a great place!

Had to pit stop in Tobermory to sort my failed engine.

Was met by the THA manager, Jim Traynor who could not be friendlier and more helpful, towed me onto the pontoons and set about locating phone numbers for me. Met up with TobermoryPhil who was also really helpful and came down to the boat to introduce himself. The local marine engineer, Phillippe, who was very busy, but left what he was doing to help me dismantle the pump using his workshop.

So, parts on route to arrive tomorrow, hopefully on way tomorrow evening.

Well, he will need something to do while he's waiting.

Tobermory is a great example of what can happen when a community runs things for itself.

My own enforced imprisonment in Tobermory was following arrival with a 2nd tech problem in two years there, I asked Jim, "Where's Phillipe?".... answer? "He's away on holiday back to France." Aaargh!

In agreement with WC, both Jim and Phillipe are most helpful and cheerful. Jim had a health problem a year or two ago and was severely missed while in recovery. He is also a volunteer CG and I couldn't think of a more worthy chap for a BEM/OBE or similar.

Couldn't agree more. Jim the Pontoon's a really decent guy, friendly, helpful and can give good advice if sought. We called in the other day and, with there being very little wind, couldn't make our mind up whether to go out or not. Jim reminded us that, with a boat, the world is your oyster. Nice wee bit of encouragement so had a great time in Coll, Muck (musical evening with John the Banjo on "Kieta") and Loch na Droma Buidhe where we had Mr and Mrs Webcraft's "Fairwinds" rafted up to us. We were anchored beside "Swedish Maid", a boat we've seen around area but don't "know". Anyway, there was a fine fiddler on board so we once again got the instruments out. Very pleasant indeed.

The Webcrafts are off to Coll and we're on our way home. Shame, because the weather is beautiful although the winds are light and, out of the sun, the air is still cool. But at least the temperature is mainly in double figures after pretty cold April and May.

If you look out over Edinburgh roof tops, I slated most of those roofs, do they call me BOB The Slater, do they hell; if you cast your eye over the Firth of Forth, those yachts, I rigged most of those yachts, do they call me BOB the Rigger, no they don't; the Forth Road Rail Bridge, I painted one year, am I known as BOB the Painter, no! Agree; had two sunny days in Tobermory during a recent ten days up there and had a great time.
Gosport tonight; if someone can think of a better chalk / cheese comparison, let's 'ave it!

I've warned you lot before about the dangers of eulogising about the west coast. Quite why you need to remark on friendliness, helpfulness and good service, I don't know. It may not be the norm elsewhere but those poor souls don't get any benefit from knowing they are deprived.
Get back to cursing the weather, the midges, the lack of tepid bitter, the impossibility of buying alcohol before 10am (unless you know where), the high cost of everything - did I mention the weather? The rainy season is due in about a week!
This is the 2nd year I've had to buy sunscreen, apparently it is not available on the NHS despite the cost of curing the effects of not using it - I blame the tories.

lovely place, just way too expensive and no chippy just that crappy van, and too many old folk. Once you are out of there, go into loch Drumbuie........peace...........what cruising Scotland is all about.

Probably, but I'd guess most sailors will now use the new facilities by the pontoons (see AWOL's post above).
