Watched the final episode of 'To the Ends of the Earth' last night.
Couldn't quite work out what they were doing when ice was spotted on the horizon.

They appeared to set all sail, sail towards the ice at full speed, then swerve (tack?) away from it at the last moment.

Did I miss something while cracking open another can?

I half watched two of ther programmes. Very poor. Badly scripted, badly acted, badly cast, badly edited.

Pity.

And they all appeared to be dressed in their summer best. Weird. In fact, a very weird series altogether. I enjoyed the first episode but the last was awful. Interesting book, though

Nope missed it too,

one minute on a port reach the next minute something fell on someone , lots of shouting and there they were sailing off...

Why can no-one filming a sailing ship ever do better than having panting sails whenever the camera pans up to the masts and idiots swinging a lead in 110 Fathoms.

Anyone understand why the foremast caught fire probably some months after having the blacksmith round.....

Mind you I watched all 3 episodes hoping that eventually things might improve...who is the fool?

Agree about some of the sailing shots, but otherwise a really witty representation of what a long passage must have been like in those days. By the end of the voyage I was glad to get off too.. The characters, IMHO, were very real, and the drunken scenes in the aft cabin in heavy weather hilarious.
I think you'll find that the 'fire down below' had more to do with Mr Summer's desolation at being reprimanded by his captain and his overwhelming jealousy of the frenchie...

I spose the mobo equivalent would be that edge of the seat "Triangle" with the ageing Kate O Mara and was it Larry Lamb?
