After a lot of deliberation we finally sold our beloved yacht Gracie May and set out to buy a motor boat. There were a number of personal reasons for the decision, but having crossed that line in the sand we were excited to make the change. The biggest challenge (as always) was "what boat?". If you say the words "motor boat", the image in my head was very different to the image in Mandy's - Mine was a traditional trawler-style, hers was a lot more modern & glamorous.
Add to the mix the desire to have 2 double cabins, a master with both-sides access to the bed and the need to fit an 11m x 3.5m berth (we live in Port Solent with the berth at the end of the garden) and we had a challenge on our hands. Lots of options were investigated and discounted, then completely out of left-field came Serenity. She's a Viking Marin Viki 34 Aft Cabin (no, we hadn't heard of one either), which, while not being a conventional beauty ticks all the boxes and more. She has two full-height double cabins, two heads, a comfortable saloon and with a pair of Yanmar 240's gets on the plane OK and will cruise comfortably at 20kts.
First impressions of life with a Mobo are good. I'm loving the visibility from a flybridge and the extra space in a boat with the same basic footprint as our yacht is remarkable. What I hadn't realised is how attuned I had become to judging relative time and distance at 5-6kts and how hard it is adjusting to 3 times that speed, but I guess that will come with time and experience.
Anyway, enough of my prattling, here's a pic of Serenity - do give us a wave if you see us out & about.
