I know this is a variation on various threads on this site (with a twist). I have just secured a job in Taunton and want somewhere to moor my motorboat so I don't have to drive to the middle of Wiltshire every day and can spend time on the boat during the week (power is preferrable too). Any bright ideas? Looking at the various threads Portishead seems to be the best choice but I'm hoping someone may know of something further down. However I've heard the Portishead clan are a nice kind bunch - not sure if that rumour is true or not though :-)

As has been said on a recent thread, there is only Watchet with sea access. The road access is not good, so may take you nearly as long as Wiltshire. There used to be a strange marina in Bridgewater with a lockgate to the river but when I last looked (about 10 years ago) the gate was not working. Instow/Appledore is a bit further but it dries, as do Minehead, Ilfracombe and Watermouth.

Guys. Thank you for all the responses. I had a look at various web sites and actually visited portishead and I had a look at the facilities earlier today. ONLY problem I see is there were kids in the car park throwing stones over the tops of the cars in the car park. Saw white mischief so looking forward to saying hello if I stop dithering and actually make a decision!
Of course I now need crew and decent weather to get the old tub down from sharpness. ;-)

Hi Dave, we're planning a trip to lydney next weekend. There should be about 8 boTs going down - mostly from portishead but a couple from Cardiff as well. You could always nip across from sharpness on the Saturday and leave in convoy with us on Sunday. Mind you we are all raggies, but I'm sure we can put up with a mobo following us :D

I'm not sure the stone throwing thing is a regular problem - lots of kids drop crab lines over the wall but its usually all pretty good natured. As you saw we would be right in the firing line if stones were hitting boats so I'm sure I would know.

Blue pearl. Thanks, I'll see if I can get crew and let you know. I'll also check the tides in case I can only get crew for Sunday but assume you'll be heading out just on slack? Thanks for offer. :-).
White mischief, thanks. As long as cars would be ok. Some little skumbag tried to crow bar one of the doors open on my car last night in Taunton. Only just had my other car back after it was broken in to on my drive. Apart from the job I'm having some bad luck at the mo. Perhaps Portishead is what I need.lol.

Dave, PM sent with mobile number.
Yep, we'll be heading out Sunday morning from Lydney, heading across towards Berkeley almost dead on HW (there's no slack to speak of down there). So 10:10am or there abouts you'll see us all in convoy. We'll be monitoring 16 and 77 so feel free to call us on VHF as well. Entry into Lydney is a little daunting if you've not done it before, we watched to narrow boats come over from Sharpness during the summer Lydney rally ............. very interesting to see the two different approaches ! One came diagonally across and straight in (against the tidal flow) and the other came across the up on the Lydney side before turning sharp to port and into the lock.
There is quiet a strong flow going past the entrance, but as soon as you get your nose past the end of the pier it goes slack (prepare to straighten up pretty quickly).
This pic shows the narrow boats coming across along with two mobos

This one is the entrance to the harbour - loads of space once you're inside.

So what happens up at Lydney then? Presumably an overnighter with a visit to the yacht club.

Is this something I need to put on my to do list?

Yes Russell, leaving early Saturday and overnighting before returning Sunday morning. Lydney YC have kindly agreed to open the club for us and let us use the BBQ facilities .......... BYO food. All welcome (I think!)

Got the pm thanks. Replying on two threads now. :-) thanks for info on tides etc. Those two narrow boats and cruisers were friends of mine, I was watching them all the way across (inbound and outward bound) so I must have seen you too. Saw various sail boats leaving the rally and heading down, that must have been you!
