(Semi) interestingly, my grandfather on my mother's side was in the Navy then and invloved in the surrender of the German U boats at Harwich, as such we had little interesting bits of U boat dotted about the house that must have 'come loose' or 'fallen off' when they were being handed over ??

Does it matter? As a reminder and a tribute it has done its job.

Quite why a U boat from a force that that slaughtered tens of thousands of Allied sailors is seen as an appropriate "tribute" to anythoing or anyone is utterly beyond me.
Tribute to what? The brave (undoubtably so) sailors of the Kriegsmarine? What about our boys?
It seems utterly perverse to me that we are apparently paying tribute to them at this time rather than out own.

Perhaps the presence of this memorial, or whatever it is, will allow people to remember the events in their own way, with some being reminded of the suffering caused and the effect on our war effort, while others preferring to think in more general terms. It doesn't offend me, but I always find submarines especially sinister, even when they are on our side. The proximity of this thread to another about firewood leads me to think that its days are numbered.
