we are looking for the best jump off point on the east coast for holland.4 boats coming down from north east 2010.

I thought I read a thread like this including a few replies earlier today!

As the replies said - it depends where in Holland.

Den Helder, Texel and the Frisian islands, go direct or from Lowestoft (slightly N of due East ~130 ish miles) . Den Helder is an easy entrance but make sure you get the tide right - it's a long slog up the Schupengat(?sp) if you get it wrong! The same is true of Texel - Oudeschilde.

IJmuiden - go from Lowestoft (105 miles Lowestoft to IJmuiden almost due east). Its entrance is easy - lots of shipping, but restricted to a well-marked channel. Be careful of the gas platforms on the way across, though. No problem, just keep clear.

All the rest of Holland, further south, try Harwich. There's no need to go further south on this side.

Enjoy the trip.

Any idea what the Harwich/Nieuwpoort and the Harwich/Flushing sailing distances are?

Harwich-Nieuwpoort:just under 90NM
Harwich-Flushing: just under 100NM

However, I would advise against either of these.
It's a long trip, depending an weather you can average 4kts SOG or 7kts SOG - the tide might have turned.
Off Nieuwpoort -> sandbanks
Off Flushing -> strong tides - you don't want to be pushing it.

If you're heading that way, I would advise making for one of the 'deep water' ports: Ostend (if planning Nieuwpoort) or Zeebrugge (if planning Flushing).
Once you're near, depending on what the tide's doing, you can always divert.

I also tend to use Blankenberge, but mostly for the trip home, on the "fast out, slow home" principle. It has no sand banks to consider on the way to Harwich, but you usually have to avoid Low Water.

For my money, the north of Holland is more interesting than the south and I would be aiming for somewhere like Ijmuiden to start a cruise, though I have had many happy weeks in the south when I was compelled to have short cruises.

We would use the south for two week trips and the north for three week ones. Going from Ipswich to Den Helder took around 23.5 hours and that's not a lot of fun for two. To Blankenberge we took around 13 hours which is far better.
Surprisingly, we have yet to go into Ostende (by water at least). Maybe we'll do it one May.

Scenic route to Niewpoort

The reason for Nieuwpoort is that the food at KYCN is outstanding. I guess Oostende is a good first bet and I see what you mean about the tides; I've experienced the strong cross tides at Nieuwpooet and Flushing and was pretty sure I would have struggled to fight my way up a big spring tide at either. Mind you we get out of the Deben easily enough

From how far up?

How far North are you?

I'm planning to cross to Den Helder next summer from Peterhead, NE Scot. Wondering whether to go straight line (350 NM) or via an English stop over. Given I'll only have about 2 weeks holiday for the round trip I'm minded to go for the straight line option to give me more time cruising Holland.

Thoughts?
