To continue the photo\'s

This one can't really be called a competition as I do not know 'exactly' where it is.

I have an idea, I hope someone on here might be able to say for definite.

It is on the Adriatic, it was taken in 1974. We were living in Zagreb at the time so it is not too far from there. If it is where I think it is there is now a marina there possibly.

Here is one taken in the town that day, I am at the back with my mum and sister.

Lets see if anyone can help me with this one.

Re: To continue the photo\'s

No idea, but I'll ask my mum tonight, she's Croatian and may have an idea.

Isn't it lovely, though..! Spent a week this summer being shown around by our Zagrebcani relatives (as I do every year...), who are determined that we should sail over as soon as possible and take 'em all out in the boat. I keep telling them that any more than me and HWMO in Santa Teresa will be a bit of a push and grilling cevapcici on the foredeck is really not an option but that, yes, the engine may well run on the travarica my cousin makes at her vineyard (I'm sure you've heard of the local firewater made from grass - classy!).

Pip pip.

If it is as good as those pics indicate, Dearheart and I
really must do it this year. Having been to Caribean
two years running, we have to spread ourselved around.
Do give us some must see places.

Regards Briani

Well, Hvar - voted one of 10 most beautiful islands on the planet by I think Conde Nast Traveller mag a couple of years ago - is a must see. Local crop is lavender so you get constant wafts of lovely scent. And feel very relaxed, of course. HWMO and I went there for our honeymoon, and stayed in one of the amazing state-run mega hotels. Bizarre. Towering men (Dalmatians – the people - are very tall, hence excellent basketball players) with thick moustaches crouching on their lips would stroll menacingly around the dining room of an evening, hands occasionally reaching towards their pockets. We decided that this must be the dinner police, on hand to ‘encourage’ diners to eat all their food or else.

Zagreb is a great city, small so good size for walking, fab Austro-Hungarian empire architecture, loads of art, feels very prosperous and nice n lively. I’ve spent a lot of time there as that’s where mum’s from.

Coastwise don't go if you want sandy beaches. Or any kind of beaches: they just don't exist. However, the Dalmatian coast is extremely beautiful, akin I think to Greek island type thing, the water is extremely clean and some great snorkelling to be had. But don't ask anyone there about where Dalmatian dogs come from. They've never heard of them.

Dubrovnik, of course, is a must see, a stunning medieval walled city. They’re doing some brilliant reconstruction work after the war, still, and it’s sobering to look at the ‘bombing map’ they’ve got tacked up – shows you where the shells fell in the 90s. Scary. Oh, and fabulous pizza in Dubrovnik, too. Dubrovnik is getting expensive now, as foreigners seem to be buying property for holiday homes at an alarming rate, but you can see why.

All along the Adriatic are gorgeous little islands, Korcula is another and then there's the Kornati National Park, a string of conical volcanic islands which must be spectacular to sail around. I've never actually been sailing in Croatia, so I'm sure there are others on this forum who can give you info re. the best places to sail, marinas etc.

If you’re vegetarian things might be a little difficult, though. Vegetarianism is looked upon as a kind of illness and veganism as a perversion. Everyone speaks pretty good English, but they can be a bit reserved and surly (ah, so that’s where I get it from...), certainly not like their Italian neighbours. It’s a lovely country, and my mother still sings nostalgic songs of Marshall Tito, wiping away a tear with the old red neck scarf she wore as a child while building roads. The good old days...
