subject slightly, I am finding recently that my inbox is stuffed full of messages from strangely-named people offering me cut price solutions to ahem middle aged men's verticality problems. Have I been singled out specialy for this attention? Are my medical records public knowledge? Is there anything I cam do to stop these "people" emailing me? Technical advice appreciated!
 
A search on 'spam' will reveal all. Your email provider should have options to reduce the incidence of this pest.

The important thing is never to reply to these jerks. Often they say 'reply with the message "unsubscribe" if you don't want to receive further offers'. That is a con and serves only to confirm your mail address is valid. You wil get lots of spam if your email address is a simple combination of common names.
 
I used to be worried when they started offering remedies for hair loss; I thought that they were using hidden web cams - it was getting really personal !!
 
You and me both. I just delete them.
I think we had a thread on this just recently and Brendan recommended some software. If you are using your inbox the receive business enquiries these software packages can junk e-mails that you wanted, because they come from someone you don't know or have a rejected subject heading (or none). I just carry on deleting them one by one.
I think the clue to all these Manhoodd, and medisins, and Bouy Cheeply e-mails is that they are written by someone whose 1st language is not English.
 
Man I for one am glad I received those type of email. I only had a couple of inches but now need a wheelbarrow (bought on ebay) Then luckily because untill now I have had no erectile dysfunction I saw an email offering viagra...another problem solved. I also sleep better at night because of the online pharmacy allowing me to buy Morphine.
Life is great! thank goodness for spam!
 
I just assumed that the Wife had been blabbing again.

I don't think it will help much. Most of these emails are generated randomly, using common initial/first name/surname/e-mail address combinations and have nothing to do with the number of porn sites you have visited.

At least, that's what I have told SWMBO /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
 
Yep, agreed. I don't get many of 'em, but just 'select all' then 'delete', and no probs! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was told a while ago, that to avoid almost all spam, just ensure that (as been mentioned above) you have no common name in the address, but most importantly, start and finish it with a digit or two. Works superbly for a couple of my friends. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The most important action to avoid spam is to NEVER reveal your e-mail address on a public web site... eg this forum, or any other net service...... if you need to, then get a disposable address from any one of a huge number of providers...... many service providers now offer 'disposable' e-mail addresses as a standard service offering.... I use one, and get loads of spam on it, and periodically have to junk it, and start another one.... but none on my primary address, as I keep it from the public gaze....

there are many many people trawling the net using automated tools, 'harvesting' e-mail addresses from anywhere they can find them on line, and then selling them to spammers a few million at a time..... its a falicy that using 'nospam' in your address or # instead of @ etc helps.... they figured those out long ago!
 
Well,chums, thanks for all the advice. Sgeir your suggestion is libellous. The only time I entered a porn site was when I did a search on "scuttlebutt" (at least on this computer. The registry on my last pc got so contaminated I had to junk the whole thing)

One more thing. Is this cut price viagra etc the real thing or is it just a scam - any experiences anyone?
 
As I use one single email address for everything, I get a lot of spam. I use Qurb which is great. Very easy to use. As mentioned though, not much good for a business where you get lots of email from previously unknown email addresses as it will treat them as spam.

The viagra on sale cheap is often not the real thing. It may contain the same chemical but not formulated in the same way or tested for side effects
