Hi Everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster in here.

I have a conundrum that I'm seeking advice from the panel on.

I have just bought a Hustler 30 and I'm looking to move her from Ipswich to her new home at Mersea, once there she'll be lifted out immediately (hopefully) where I can set to work getting her refurbished ready for next season (new electrics, gas installation, heater installation).

Total time in water 7 - 14 days (a few days to shakedown on the Orwell before sailing to Mersea. Then possibly waiting for lift out on buoy at Mersea).

She has some old antifoul on her already but I suspect that's going to be useless as she's been ashore for around 10 months now.

However, I'm wondering whether it's worth the time and expense of whacking on antifoul for a total of 14 days in the water. Especially as around March next year I'm looking to cover her with Gelshield 2000 so that means stripping off all the old fouling.

I've got a tin of 10 year old... yes, 10 year old unopened antifoul that I found in a dark corner of the garage that I can apply over the bits the surveyor scraped away.

My gut instinct (and wallet :-)) says to leave it alone, just apply the 10 year old antifoul to the scraped away bits. As 14 days afloat isn't going to attract that much growth, nothing that a quick karcher when she's lifted out can't solve.

What does the panel think?

Oh and what's the latest recommendation for antifoul for our coast?

Many thanks!

I would not bother to do any antifouling at all if you are going to come out so soon. It would be a complete waste of time.

Nice boat, good luck with her.

I would agree with MrCramp, don't bother for 14 days, you may get some slime and baby barnacles but nothing much in 14 days. Simply not worth the effort, especially as it is all going to be stripped off again in the winter.

Good luck with the refit.

i wouldn't bother either , i did something similar last year and my boat was in the water for about a fortnight with nothing on the bottom apart from primer and came out clean as a whistle .

i havew no idea if A/F has a shelf life tho ....................

Absolutely no point, as I presume you will be working on her over the winter. If you are looking to race her, you will take it back to hull anyway.

Hope you enjoy your new boat!

No point whatsoever even applying over the bits the surveyor scraped away! 14 days at very worst will see a thin coat of slime.

As for what to use next season...now that is a good question!

In Brightlingsea at the present moment it doesn't seem to make a jot of difference what antifoul you use...in fact popular reckoning at present is that B&Q trade gloss will probably work as well as any £75 for 2.5 litre antifoul...you will still have to scrub down after two months in!

You pays your money...
