Just a few cables from Boulters Lock

Now that Col has been a real treasure and got me the hatch lifter and I've spent today making up a couple of brackets I should be able to install it tomorrow.
Final problem is where do I find a switch that will let me switch 12v DC motor voltage forward and reverse? Anyone know?

Index marine should be able to supply the jobbie, even a waterproof one, but maplins might be an idea aswell. You may need to consider a relay aswell, to take the current, but I think not, a switch should do it, two pole biased, so it springs back to off, after operation.

Ah, now I'd say you want to elctrify this hatch. I've used electric window components to good effect. Easiest way to spark protect a motor is to cover it in heat shrink, then dip it in liquid neoprene, or what ever they call it. I even made an electric car jack for the wife using a window motor, so I don't have to go and change a wheel for her when shes out. Did you get the 316 from Jones's?

OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!

Made the brackets up from some allie angle I had lying around.
hatch lifter is fully sealed unit with 12volt suppy leads ready to connect up. Just need to suss out a switching arrangement so's I can reverse the 12v supply.
Current drain only 2.5 amps so sparking shouldnt be a problem.

Depending on the current required, use 2 (double contacts) car headlamp type relays sited close to motor, have one wired for rotation in one direction and other for opposite rotation for up to about 40 amps. Any decent auto electrician will have something suitable. To be really posey buy relay sockets and if one fails it is a simple plug in job to replace it. Then all you need is a small toggle or rocker switch from Maplins and a couple of diodes for coil quenching (to get rid of spikes/crackles when you operate the relays. That way you can use small wire with low current for relay coil energisation and just thick wire from battery to relay/relay to motor and have nearly full volts appearing at the motor.

If you use a big heavy switch and big thick cable over a long run you will still get a voltage drop at the motor (dependent on current) plus it will be much more ungainly.

If it is a really big motor use (eg bowthruster) use two pairs of starter solenoids for several hundred amps.

why not an old volvo outdrive switch the one for lowering and rasing the drive

Re: Using Volvo........

......thought of that but the switch is actually linked to relays mounted on the leg assembly so its a bit more complicated than just using the switch.
Vehicle Wiring Products do a rocker 'Up/Down' switch for car window drives etc which might suit me - only around a fiver as well !

Re: Using Volvo........

That window switch would do admirably! I do believe the current for a little motor such as you are using wouldn't need relays, but you will need a double pole switch, if theres only two wires on the motor and some nifty wiring to make it all work. I would be tempted to ask an auto electrician about electric window wiring, as I cant remember the circuit diagram off the top of my head now, I would need to work it out.

Re: Using Volvo........

Well, got it in and working.....quite satisfyng watching the hatch slowly open and close !
The up/down switch appears to have the circuitry built in to it to reverse the polarity of the power supply :

Should be ok as long as it can handle around 3 amps working plus surge at end of stroke if I dont let go quick enough!

Re: Using Volvo........

Glad to hear it's all done,
fancy doing mine?

Re: Using Volvo........

Looks perfect for the job, three amps wont be a problem for that switch, it was designed for the job!

Re: Using Volvo........

Why do I have a vision of Thing from The Adams Family coming out of your super-duper electric hatch and pinching guests on the ankles?

Must be the boredom of sitting at my desk jobless and watching the new lot make a total a*se of things. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Thing.....

Dont need Thing to bite ankles - Bosun dog well trained already to do that tho seems my ankles are particularly tasty !
Had to smile at the vision tho......hatch slowly rises and 'Thing' emerges into the light etc etc........

Therapy for you....nip down to tescos and buy massive supervalue pack bog rolls and throw one at new lot every time they arse something up.........dont forget to charge to expenses.......
