Shortly after I purchased my corniche both rear crankshaft oil seals began to leak engine oil presumably due to the boat lying unused for three years. Although the leak is minor I have decided that the time has come to replace the offending seals however I am looking for a bit of advice-
can the seal be replaced after the flywheel has been removed or does the bell housing have to come off to access the seal as this would require rigging a lifting beam to support the rear of the engine.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I dive in
regards Gerry

Well you could look at it that way but I enjoy doing the work and knowing things are right it will only get worse nobody likes an oily bilge

Gearbox out, flywheel and drive plate off, you can decide if you want to rust damaging the seal when fitting it if you pull it out and fit another without taking the bell housing off.

Or you support the engine remove the rear housing and drift the seal out, fit the new seal etc, you still risk damaging the seal and potentially moving the spring from the seal unless you hire the tool to go over the end of the crank, also the sump pan bolts to the bell housing so you also risk damaging the sump gasket which in turn will leak.
The correct way is to remove the sump first so your looking at taking the engine out of the boat or at least raising it enough to get the sump off. I've been down this route with my corniche, I had both engines out and fitted new fuel tanks while doing this. Happy spannering.

Thanks for the input Paul have you ever done the seal without taking the rear housing off as this would be my preferred route
