I am servicing my Beta BD722 myself ( or trying to ... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif). It has a TMC40 gearbox on the back which looks to be factory fitted. There is a TMC40 manual on board which says to use SAE30/40 oil but the BD722 handbook says to use ATF oil , as does the technodrive web-site. The guys in Halfords have never heard of SAE30/40 oil nor can I source it anywhere else. ATF oil is red and the stuff in the gearbox is yucky black. There are several different type of ATF oil just to further confuse the issue. I asked the Beta service department but "bog standard ATF fluid should be OK" is not a confidence inspiring reply.

Any suggestions ?

most marine g/boxes use ATF oil. You need a good quality Dexron 11 or Dexron 111 atf oil ie castrol, shell, etc. altho most g/boxes manuals say that you can use motor oil.I use Dexron 11 by Comma in my Hurth g/box and change every year.

To follow everyone else - I got the following from Technodrive:

Subject: R: TMC 40 M ATF oil
Date sent: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 10:25:44 +0200
From: "After market" <colletti.mattia@technodrive.it>

you can use any type of ATF oil for the mechanical gearbox TMC 40 M.

I have a Beta BZ482 with a Technodrive TMC 40 gearbox.

The Technodrive manual says use SAE20/30 oil and the Beta manual says use engine oil 15 W40

It also says that if a Hurth 50/100 gearbox is fitted, then use ATF

Personally, I would go with the Hurth manual and use a good quality engine oil, the same as goes in the engine.

Are you sure that the reference to ATF is not associated with the alternative Hurth gearbox?
