Titchmarsh and the Twizzle

The weekend which I would consider to be the most favourable tide in the next 2 months would be 15/16 July which is when the East Coast Old Gaffers Association are holding their annual event based at Walton and Frinton Yacht Club.

I did go round the Wade in my dinghy during last years event and would expect any youngster to be captivated by all the small gaffers sailing around the Island, many sailed by youngsters.
High water on Sat 15/7 is 1545 BST 3.86metres, 1 day after springs.
Other possible dates would be
Sat 17/6 HW 1644 BST 3.55mt 2 days after springs
Sat 1/7 HW 1615 BST 3.52mt 4 days after springs

I could be interested in this, I am already regretting no longer owning a sailing dinghy. Middle 2 weeks of August are my target time at present, subject to SWMBO's contracts though:-(

The Old Gaffers have been doing this for some years now.

"Swallows and Amazons Weekend 15/16 July

"This is the big event for little boats on the East coast. We will be racing, cruising and messing about in the Walton Backwaters, otherwise known as Arthur Ransome’s Secret Waters, on the weekend of 15/16th July. We welcome all little boats - scows, smacks boats, jewels and dinghies of all kinds. There will be classes for vintage dinghies, and modern replicas, so please come and join us.

"Walton & Frinton Yacht Club have again kindly invited us to host the event at their clubhouse. I encourage you to come down Friday night and register if you can, as we can be quite busy with last minute arrivals and sorting out individual requirements . Saturday afternoon, about two hours before HW (HW 1545) we will be racing the traditional Swallows and Amazons Round the Island Race. Later in the afternoon we will be honing our skills at paper boats design and later on we will have prize giving, followed by supper laid on at the club. It is also planned to have a band. On Sunday morning there will be a car boot sale for boat equipment, so fill the dinghy with any of your surplus gear! Later on we will set off again around the Walton Backwaters for a picnic and Treasure Hunt, aiming to be back ashore late afternoon.

"There are launching slips available from half tide onwards for those arriving by road. Those coming by sea may want to book a mooring for a mother ship at Yacht club pond or at Titchmarsh marina. Those with tents and caravans are welcome, but please let me know so that we can have space ready for you.

I was not meaning to suggest that forumites gate crash an organised function. I followed the tail end of the gaffers around the island last year but I was a spectator rather than a participant.

My children are 19,22 and 24 so are unlikely to join in a Swallows and Amazons theme weekend, but I am sure they would have enjoyed it some 10 years ago. I am likely to be in the vicinity, with perhaps 4 other boats, so I will look out for you should this event take off.

I crossed the Wade some 5 or 6 yrs ago from the west to the east on a rising tide about an hour before HW & the day before springs.I went from the pool on the south end of Honey Island (although it was under water at the time) where boats anchor..The hardest bit is finding the end of the Twizzle.I was motoring in a flat calm & my draught was a metre.When I paid my dues at Titchmarsh the assistant said that he had never done it but but he reckoned more& more boats were trying it & doing a Ransome.
